View Full Version : email problems after domain transfer

I just transferred my domain badpoetry.net to hostrocket two days ago. Today, the DNS for the website finally updated, but email still seems quirky.
I've gotten webmail to work without problems, but seem unable to check via my Outlook Express.
For the main email account (for me, badpoet@badpoetry.net), what is the username for checking email? In webmail, all I have to enter is badpoet, rather than the whole email address (unlike additional accounts that have to enter zach@badpoetry.net, for example). I assume all I need is "badpoet" rather that "badpoetry.net" for pop3 email, but neither is working right now.
Settings I'm using right now:
user: badpoet (also tried badpoet@badpoetry.net}
password: (correct password, quadruple checked)
server: mail.badpoetry.net
Any ideas as to what's wrong?
Thanks,
Katie

Hi, Katie. FYI I use OE for my HR email and to date it's always functioned as designed. In my case I don't happpen to use the default email addy however I just set it up as a test using the settings you mentioned (my username without the @mydomain.com, my HR account password and email.mydomain.com for both POP3 and STMP email servers) and it seems to work OK in my limited tests.
Have you tried the OE autoconfig option in Control Panel? If you go into Mail Manager in your CP under Add/Remove Accounts after "Main Account" all the way to the right (you may have to scroll depending on your screen resolution) you should find an "Outlook (Express) AutoConfig" hyperlink. Clicking that link should retrieve a .REG file (email.reg) which when run will automatically create an email account for your main addy in OE with all of the appropriate settings. If your manual attempts are failing giving your HR email a shot at setting itself up might be worth a try.
Good luck!

Thanks Don, but I've tried that too. Twice, even. Since that *should* set up all of the variables just the way they need to be, it makes me suspicious that something may be wrong with the way my account is set up. Other ideas?

"Since that *should* set up all of the variables just the way they need to be, it makes me suspicious that something may be wrong with the way my account is set up."
Ditto...from what you described it sounds like you were setting it up correctly when you were doing it manually, and if neither those accounts or the accounts the HR autoconfig scripts setup for you work then clearly *somethings* up there.
"Other ideas?"
Well what exactly happens when you try to retrieve your email via OE? Does the connection attempt fail with an error message, or does it appear to connect OK but you just don't get any mail?
If it's a problem connecting to HR's email server it's possible that the error message output may yield some clues (or you can have OE keep a log of the attempt and look at that for clues, in OE Click Tools > Click Options > Choose the Maintenance tab > Check the "Email" box under Troubleshooting > Click OK > Try to connect > Use Find > Files and Folders to check for the pop3.log file in your OE data folder)
Have you tried using OE to download email sent to other email addys on your HR account, and do they work OK?
Good luck!

I think it was saying that the password was incorrect.
I opened up IE again to check the error message and (gasp!) suddenly it worked. I hadn't changed anything and it just worked.
Odd. But thanks for helping, Don!

"Odd"
Well let's keep in mind that we are discussing PCs and the Internet, where odd, quirky behavior is the rule rather than the exception...and here we have the added factor that your site is still *settling in* after a move.
"thanks for helping, Don!"
Well it looks like the "help" here mostly consisted of keeping you company while your problems worked themselves out on their own, but you're welcome nonetheless!
Enjoy!

Try this ... instead of using mail.badpoetry.net in your Outlook Express server fields, try using the IP address of your site. My domain transfer hasn't propagated yet, and that's how I've been testing my e-mail settings with Hostrocket.
If it works (using your IP address), then you may have a DNS problem.
