image generation

I've been using GD to generate images via PHP, which has worked beautifully. However, I would like to be able to add text to the images I create. As I understand it, FreeType is installed on my server; however, I can't figure out the path to the fonts - if indeed there are any available. Anybody had any luck with this? Are fonts indeed available, and if so, what are they and where (path); if not, how (it it's possible) would one go about installing them?
