I'll do it.

I charge anywhere between $5.15/hr and $112.37/hr (USD) depending. I'd even work $3.25/hr + tips if you need a bartender in a busy bar.

matrix,

unfortunately your inquiry is extremely vague. how is anyone to know what exactly you need help on if you state that you need help on items you haven't yet learned??

i think you may need to sharpen up on your communication skills a bit. i'd be glad to help, but if you need help on stuff you don't know, how am i to know what it is that you don't know?

right now, it could be generally assumed that you don't know much of anything. :D

arghh you dont understand

I know what i want to do, i have a vision of what i want to be done, but the stuff, i cannot do..Its like i want to do something with PHP, but i have never learned PHP before.. Get it?

I know what i want to do, I've seen finished products of what i want to do, its just that I need help producing it..:D

What do you want to do with PHP?
There's plenty of pre-made scripts out there.
That is the best way of starting to code, just install a pre-made and start hacking it.
The only way that you'll ever be able to maintain your site is if you know at least the basics of the code you are using.
Let us know what it is you want and we'll see if we can point you in the right direction.

BTW we do understand, we've all been there!

Look, if you take your questions down the private IM route, nobody else will benefit. The whole idea of keeping the threads archived is to help others as well as the guy asking the questions. Just keep it in the forum and we'll try our best to help. It's getting late over here in the UK so I'm calling it a day for now.

well, it's obviously not that big of a rush because you still haven't clued any of us in to what you're looking for.

so we know it's php. fine. but what do you want done in php? what are you trying to achieve? what are you having troubles with?

you could have avoided all of these senseless posts by posting the above information in your very first post. now, it's been two days and are you any closer to your goal? i didn't think so. that's because you haven't communicated anything to us that will help you.

This is the first thing i want to do. First, i want to have a Members Section in my website for only people who are part of my organization. They will have a login username and password for their account, and they will be required to type in a Username and Password in the mainpage to login. Now this is how i want it to work. Only i can create accounts for them, and i can modify, delete them and what not. And that the members have only access to certain parts of the site that REGULAR PUBLIC STRANGERS can not access, because the information is confidential and i do not want others to look at it. Now what do i need, CGI or PHP?

DCE
01-26-2002, 02:30 PM
Sraight forward .htaccess should do that, just go to your *directory protection* in the control panel and follow the links to protect certain directories.

It can also easily done with simple PHP or PHP/MySQL
Let us know how you get on

tHeMaTriX|L|
01-26-2002, 03:18 PM
i have it in .htacess but i dont like it, i want one where users can directly enter in a username and password in the MAIN PAGE, then click login and it brings them into members page..
so that requires cgi or php........

DCE
01-26-2002, 03:40 PM
This one looks OK

You should be able to intergrate the login page into your homepage

tHeMaTriX|L|
01-26-2002, 03:48 PM
hmmmm do you think you can chat with me over IM program because i dont really understand something.....

PS, for .htaccess, is it possible to integrate the login into the main page without that screen popping up asking for authorization?

DCE

DCE

I can't think of any way to use .htaccess intergrated into a page without getting the alert box

tHeMaTriX|L|
01-26-2002, 06:51 PM
ok then forget it this whole login thing, since .htaccess does the job anyways...... now onto the next thing...........

prymal
01-28-2002, 12:41 PM
well, you can have a screen with the login/password w/o the standard alert box that will take the .htpasswd and .htgroup info.

create a javascript file (maybe "auth.js") with the following lines and call it from in between your <head></head>

function Login(form) {
var username = form.username.value;
var password = form.password.value;
var server = form.server.value;
if (username && password && server) {
var auth = "http://" + username + ":" + password + "@" + server;
window.location = auth;
}
else {
alert("Enter your username and password.");
}
}

next, add the following to your html where you want the client access to be:

<form name=login>
<input type="hidden" name="server" value="www.yourhost.com/securefolder/">
<table>
<tr>
<td align="right" width="75" class="norm">Username:&nbsp;</td>
<td width="75"><input class="input" size="10" name="username"></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td align="right" width="75" class="norm">Password:&nbsp;</td>
<td width="75"><input class="input" type="password" size="10" value name="password"></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td width="75"></td>
<td width="75"><input class="button" onclick="Login(this.form)" type="button" value="Login" name="button"></td>
</tr>
</table>

and there you have it.

mr. popularity, if matrix said this to begin with, yes, i could have helped him much, much sooner. :D

01-28-2002, 03:42 PM
uhh prymal it doesnt work welll.. a first grader can crack it easily..
i tried what you said, i tested the page out and the page where i wanted the client to go, it asked for a username + password to go to the client page, which is kind of necessary.. secondly, the same window popped up asking for username and password, i typed random stuff in and it let me in.. hmmmmmm

prymal
01-28-2002, 05:15 PM
huh?

the dialog box will only come up if you enter an invalid login/passwd, which is what you must have done.

i highly doubt a first grader could crack the encryption of an .htpasswd file. i'd pay money to see that.

as for why it accepted a bogus password, it's definitely something on your side... you must not have set something up properly.

if you mean having the login/password up at the top, a simple perl script will fix that.

you'll need to add the following in your root .htaccess file:

Redirect /securefolder http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/group.pl

then create a file in your cgi-bin called group.pl (or whatever name you choose):

#!/usr/bin/perl

use CGI;

$user=$ENV{'REMOTE_USER'};
my $site="http://www.yourdomain.com";

my $x = new CGI;

if ($user eq "add_user_name_here") { print "Location: $site/securefolder/\n\n"; exit; };
print "Location: $site/redirected_folder_or_file\n\n"; exit;

chmod 755 and you're ready to go.

now, this is what i call first grader stuff. :)

i dont think u understand english :)

i said that i typed in a random password and username and it still brought me to the members only page, which it shouldnt :)
so a first grader would type in anything and they would get access :)

matrix,

i really don't know what else to tell you. i can only help you out, i can't do your work for you. i'm a busy guy in the corporate world and don't have time to write a step-by-step tutorial, even though it seems as though i've done just that.

if your authentication accepts any password, then *you* messed it up somehow. the first script i posted has nothing to do with authentication... it's merely a gateway for the authentication. which means you need to have your .htpasswd and/or .htgroup files set up correctly. do a search on those two if you don't know what they are or do.

as for it being complicated, it's actually very simple. just read it, try it out, and if all else fails, re-read it again... and so on.

maybe i should be sorry i offered my assistance in the first place.

You, my friend are getting your teeth very close to one or two hands!

If Prymal had wrote that script for me and I couldn't get it to work, I don't think I would have replied the way you did i.e. telling him it was a useless bit of code.
If you can't get a script to work that someone else has taken the time to write for you, take the time to try it again. If you still can't get it to work, politely ask where YOU may have gone wrong and ask for further instructions, don't just assume that the script was bad.
Ever thought of applying for the diplomatic service? :D

Mr. Popularity
01-29-2002, 04:02 PM
Hmm... I may be unpopular in a message board, by your standards, however Arbitron rates my radio show #6 out of 42 in the Boston market... anyway....

I do believe in the 'teach a man to fish' theory. If someone gets someone to do something for them, they don't learn how to do it the next time on their own, thus bringing them back for more help. A lot of people sign up for hosted services with the expectation that its easy to do, and they soon thereafter learn the harsh reality of web development.

As for the .htaccess file, EVERY time I help with someones .htaccess problem, I ask them to copy and paste the entire contents of their .htaccess file into a reply.

And don't be so sensitive.... I wasn't picking YOU apart... yet. :)

prymal
01-29-2002, 05:09 PM
ok, i'm going to attempt to help you (again)...

what is the url of the folder you are attempting to secure? if it's /members then i suggest you move your .htpasswd (cgi-bin is always a good place for this) to another location and make note of that in your .htaccess file in the /members directory. if not, then we're ok.

so, let's assume that /members is in fact the protected directory...

put the following in your .htaccess file in public_html (not the same .htaccess as mentioned above):

Redirect /members http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/group.pl

now, create a file in your shell (or upload as ascii via ftp) called group.pl and include the following lines:

#!/usr/bin/perl

use CGI;

$user=$ENV{'REMOTE_USER'};
my $site="http://www.yourdomain.com";

my $x = new CGI;

if ($user eq "tHeMaTriX") { print "Location: $site/members/\n\n"; exit; };
---comment: do the same for every member in your .htpasswd file --
print "Location: $site/index.html\n\n"; exit;

if you examine the code, you can also make it so that certain users will go to certain directories. make sure you chmod 755

i.e. add a line:

if ($user eq "Muffin_Man") { print "Location: $site/members/muffin\n\n"; exit; };

however, then you'll need to create another .htaccess file in your /members/muffin directory like the one that's in your /members directory.

i hope i'm clear this time around.

however, i do need to ask you.... are you ftp'ing these files or are you creating them in the shell? if you're ftp'ing them, try sending it as ascii to see if that remedies the problem.

i know i'm getting repetitive... as this is exactly what i stated before, but hey, maybe you can learn from this. :)

tHeMaTriX|L|
01-29-2002, 06:01 PM
ok here is what my group.pl looks like:

#!/usr/bin/perl

use CGI;

$user=$ENV{'REMOTE_USER'};
my $site="http://www.yourdomain.com";

my $x = new CGI;

if ($user eq "tHeMaTriX") { print "Location: $site/members/\n\n"; exit; };
if ($user eq "Muffin_Man") { print "Location: $site/members/\n\n"; exit; };
if ($user eq "jarodgsr") { print "Location: $site/members/\n\n"; exit; };
if ($user eq "chronic") { print "Location: $site/members/\n\n"; exit; };
if ($user eq "tiger_girl") { print "Location: $site/members/\n\n"; exit; };
if ($user eq "ringwraith") { print "Location: $site/members/\n\n"; exit; };
if ($user eq "zkorpion") { print "Location: $site/members/\n\n"; exit; };
if ($user eq "nero") { print "Location: $site/members/\n\n"; exit; };
if ($user eq "KillerInstinct") { print "Location: $site/members/\n\n"; exit; };

DCE, you revealed your location! (at least narrowed it down a bit). I don't bartend much anymore, as I am a professional brewer, but thats the going rate these days, even lower in some pubs. The majority of their income comes through tips, which generally runs in the neighborhood of 18%-20% (split a few ways) of gross bar sales. Making a Friday night worth in the range of $40-50 bucks an hour per bartender. Decent I guess. Wish I made that brewing, or hacking my way through linux administration.
