scripts for dummies

Is there a site with a general explanation on installing scripts in plain english?I want to add a "add your link" option and even found several for free but the instructions are somewhat lacking.The one I looked at contains approx 6 files that I understand goes into the cgi-bin file.The page or shmtl file I can edit to show as I want but the rest?
