I just added ultraboard to my college class site, in part because I liked using it here at the HR forums. It was very easy to set up, and seems like a good deal (free for personal, about $40 for full version).
After looking at all of the messages on SitePoint, I see a lot of discussion on UBB and Vbullitan, but not much on ultraboard. To me the interface seems almost the same.
For now, I'll stick with UB (the price is right!), but in the future I may want to upgrade. I am just wondering why HR decided to upgrade. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each board? If you've used both, I am interested in your comments.
{Sidebar: The HR board looks marvelous, simply marvelous!}

I've used both, and vB has a lot more features, and it uses templates and a lot of cool stuff like that...

I've had experience with UBB, UltraBoard, and vBulletin...
overall, I think vBulletin is my winner.
1) It utilizes PHP, which is alot faster then Perl in my opinion... and also because I know PHP alot better then Perl. When HR switched their knowledgebase to vB, i noticed a loading difference... didn't you? It loaded quicker, and I am able to 'surf' the board ALOT quicker.
2) It uses templates, like JohnM said... this will allow you to manipulate the looks of your bulletin board easily
3) Great support - from the makers of vbulletin.. goto their site's forum and you will see what I am talking about
4) future releases of vBulletin... right now they are about to release v2.0 which has WAY MORE features then 1.1.4. The v2 will be abundant with new features
if you are looking for a free bb, then try http://www.phpbb.com/ i've never used it personally but i heard good things about it

This depends on several factors such as:
1. Do you have the cash to spend? Do you know mySQL and PHP? If so then vBulletin
2. Looking for a free BB packed with features? Then go to http://www.ikonboard.com The newest version (3.0) slated for release later this month will support a choice of a mySQL backend or a flatfile database and is very simple to setup.

I actually spent out the $40 for the upgraded version (www.bigworms.co.uk) and was very impressed with the way it works, a lot better than the free one.
From my first impression of VB (here), and not on the admin side, I prefer the look and feel of UB.
But that's just me - warped and loving to be different.

I also upgraded to the paid version and was impressed with the added features not included in the free one. It seems like this is a pretty good program that delivers a lot of bang for the buck, especially if you can't afford one of the high dollar options. I was able to easily customize the colors, boards, etc. For my college classes, I think this was a good choice. If I ever put together a more high traffic forum, I'd probably go with VB.
Thanks for the comments!
