Site loadtime/rounded tables issue

I'm running phpWebSite with a rounded table theme, and there's a slight delay in rendering the tables, therefore the site looks crappy when it loads.

Anyone else out there running a *nuke type site with the same issue? If so, how did you resolve it?

I've optimized the graphics as much as i can using photoshop 6, and have gzip enabled thru .htaccess.

I don't know if this is any help or if you are doing it already, but how about setting the image size in the tag, so that the page knows exactly how much space to leave before the image loads.

For example:<img src="images/banner.gif" width="468" height="60" border="0">
