I often said that there is no such an application that can be defined as all-in-one, or one-step to satisfy all your needs. Take DVD ripper for example, there are DVD ripping software that prevent you from importing DVD videos with CSS or CPPM protection for to fight against copy piracy. This is right, but causes some trouble for users who want to convert DVD videos to AVI, MPEG, and WMV etc. There are always alternatives to help ourselves out.

Actually, Many American legal experts believe that under United States' Federal law, making a backup copy of a DVD-Video is legal under fair use protection meaning backup copies made with software such as DVD Decrypter are in fact legal but that distribution of the software used to make them is illegal. So today, I would like to tell you how to deal with DVD with protection legally.

The worst thing might be that you cannot import the DVD videos with protection with the DVD Ripping software you have bought, in other words, the DVD ripper you own cannot decrypt the DVD movie. Got mad about this, right?

No worries. You can take a detour. DVD decrypter is such an free application that is intended and dedicated to removes Content Scrambling System (CSS), region codes, and user operation prohibition.

Before we start DVD Decrypter requires that you have an ASPI layer installed. If you get an error message like "ASPI Initialization failed" upon starting up DVD Decrypter you have to install an ASPI layer before you can continue.

Here is the interface of this application.
http://pavtube.com/images/promotion/dvd_decrypter_1.jpg
After importing the DVD files, start to decrypt the movie by clicking on the dropdown option of “Decrypt”.
http://pavtube.com/images/promotion/dvd_decrypter_2.jpg

Now that you have got decrypted movies, you are free to import them to a video converter, and convert it to AVI, MPEG, WMV, or iPod, iPhone, Zune, PSP, Apple TV or other widescreen TV videos. I suggest you to try Pavtube video converter. The reason I recommend this is that it cannot only convert VOB files to AVI, MPEG etc, but also it can convert decrypted VOB files to videos that can be played on iPod, Zune, iPhone, Apple TV, PSP, Creative Zen, Pocket PC, Mobile Phone, Xbox 360, PDA, etc. In addition, it provides powerful editing functions, such as video effect adjusting, trimming, and cropping. The most distinguished thing is that it converts super fast.
By the way, you can buy Pavtube video converter (http://www.pavtube.com/video_converter/) with half price since all Pavtube products are 50% discounted right now. Fancy you can buy a versatile video converter only with no more than $15. It is a real value.

As I have said, there is no need to feel guilty if you have got DVD Ripper that is able to decrypt and rip the movie to video you need at the same time, e.g. Pavtube DVD Ripper (http://www.pavtube.com/dvd_ripper/). All you need to do is to make sure that you don’t use this kind of software for commercial use. And with this DVD ripper, you don’t need DVD decrypter and it saves you a lot of efforts. What’s more, Pavtube DVD Ripper is 50% discounted and you can buy one just with no more than $18. And they provide free upgrading for a life long time.

Actually, before I tried this, I also had this feeling, just like, you know, such cheap software can work freely. Now I have got rid of these doubts, because it functions fine. So if you are interested in it and want to make a budget, it is a good choice.

You may have the need to do some editing on your DVD movie and convert them with the customized editing to AVI, MPEG, WMV and 3GP video. This will be very interesting, since you are creating kind of new movie all by yourself.

To edit the DVD video, you need to find a DVD decrypting application, or DVD ripping software which provides editing options as much as possible. I am using Pavtube DVD Ripper, so, today, I just take Pavtube DVD Ripper (http://www.pavtube.com/dvd_ripper/) for example.

First, you need to import the DVD movies to the DVD ripping software.
http://www.pavtube.com/images/promotion/edit_dvd_2.jpg

Second, select the titles you would like to do editing and if you don’t know much about the movie you import, click the preview button to make sure that you are editing the right titles or chapters. And the hit the button of “Edit” to adjust the effect, trim or crop the videos.
http://www.pavtube.com/images/promotion/edit_dvd_1.jpg

Third, now let’s start the editing. Pavtube DVD Ripper offers three main editing sections, effect setting, trimming and cropping.
Effect Setting: Options are contrast, brightness for video and volume for audio.
http://www.pavtube.com/images/dvd_ripper/ripper_effect.jpg
Drag the slider bar for Brightness, Contrast, and Volume to preview the effect on the right column.
If the DVD image does not display correctly, you can tick the checkbox for "Flip" to fix it.
Remember to hit “Apply”. Hit "Apply to Child Chapters" if the file you select is a title, or "Apply to All" if the file you select is a chapter. Otherwise, you may click the "Reset" button to gain the default settings.
Trim: This is intended for users to define the beginning time as well as ending time. You can trim the section you want through either defining a specific time or an ending time or drag the side bars at the two ends to clip the movie section. The later is much more convenient. Keep in mind that you must hit the button of “Apply” and “OK” or you have spend all the time in vain.
http://www.pavtube.com/images/dvd_ripper/ripper_trim.jpg

Crop: This is intended for users to crop the image.
Select an option under the drop down list of the "Letter Box", drag the dashed frame on the preview pane, or enter value on the boxes for the four positions to set the pixels you want to cut off. If the file you select to customize is a title, you can tick the checkbox for "Apply to Child Chapters" to get other files with the same settings under the "Crop" tab.
http://www.pavtube.com/images/dvd_ripper/ripper_crop.jpg
As this guide shows, you can tick several items on the major interface and apply the settings one by one, and in this way, you keep different settings for different titles or chapters, for example, you may have trim first 3 minutes of the Title1_2, the last 30 seconds of the Title1-3 etc.

To combine the sections you have selected and edited, all you need to do is to tick the checkbox of “Merge into one file” next to the format selecting box.
http://www.pavtube.com/images/promotion/edit_dvd_3.jpg
And finally, you will get the videos consisting of your favorite parts and with your preferred settings.

DVD is short for Digital versatile disk and was initially intended to substitute for VHS tapes, since it is inconvenient to carry it about people. And it quickly came up as portable data storage device just as expected. As DVD is more and more popular, DVD ripper extends its market and plays more and more important role in our daily life.

So below are some common problems about a DVD Ripper and how to solve the problems in an appropriate way. I just would like to list Pavtube DVD Ripper(For Windows) for instance.

1. Do I have to install codec for conversion?
You do not have to install codec, as the ripper has been bundled with the decoders and encoders to support the conversion. However, if you want to play specific format on your computer, you shall install the related player to play it.

2. I converted DVD to XVID Video (*.avi). There is only sound when playing in Windows Media Player, no image.
Please make sure you have installed XviD codec on your computer. It is free for you to download and install the XviD codec. Then, you can watch XviD video with Window Media Player.

3. Among the formats in the ripper, which is the better encoder to keep video quality?
To keep the video quality without compression, it is recommended that you use the profile "Lossless uncompressed avi". Generally, formats like WMV, MP4, MOV, 3GP, MPG has been highly compressed, and some of the frames will be lost during the compression. AVI is the less compressed format. With the same settings as other formats, the AVI files will keep more data and perform completely as the original files.

4. How to speed up the conversion?
You can click on the "Settings" button, and then choose a lower video bit rate, a lower frame rate, a smaller dimension for the video size, such as 320x240, 176x144, etc. However, the settings will influence the output quality. Please choose the most convenient settings for your conversion.

5. An error message pops up, about AVW object for encoding.
This error occurs when the output folder can not be written with data any more. Please check the properties of the output folder, and the disk space of the driver, which the output folder locates. Alternatively, you can choose another folder for the output files.

6. I get the error message: The DVD cannot be imported or the IFO file cannot be imported.
Please make sure the following points:
1. The IFO file is in the same folder with the VOB file.
2. The names of the files follow the DVD naming convention. The folder should be VIDEO_TS. There is VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.IFO, VTS_01_0.VOB, VTS_01.0.DUP, etc.
3. The IFO file or the VOB file has not been destroyed. To test this, you can try if the video can play on DVD player.

7. I want to change the settings for the file to play on my iPod, what kinds of parameters can I change?
Select the file you want to convert, and click on the "Settings" button. Choose the profile for iPod, and then you can change the video codec, video bit rate, video size, frame rate, audio bit rate, and sample rate according to the iPod supported video formats. The following is the settings for the fifth generation iPod:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Low-Complexity Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
If you want to get the audio file, you can choose AAC, MP3, and WAV as iPod music with sample rate from 16 Kbps to 320 Kbps.
