View Full Version : Switching to New Servers

Has anyone switched to the new servers and been able to keep your username? I find it somewhat confusing that I can't keep my username and have to reprogram all my FTP bookmarks, mail systems and Internet Explorer passwords because HR has upgraded their servers.

Don't get me wrong, I have been SO thrilled with HR to date...Brendan and everyone else have done a fantastic job, and have blown my old hosts out of the water as far as value of services is concerned.

However, I find it confusing that we should have to transfer our sites AND give up our usernames because HR wants to install new servers. I don't really get why they don't just pop the HDs out of the Alabanzas and drop them into the new servers on the same IP address. That way, no one would need to move their sites, and we could keep our usernames. I'm sure I'm missing something and it isn't this simple, but I would hope there was SOME solution to this issue so that we did not have to give up our usernames and move and our sites and go to Network Solutions to enter in new DNS info (and wait for NSI to switch the site direction...which takes FOREVER!).

Basically, I am really happy with HR, but this is something I've been asking about since the new servers were announced, and have not gotten a straight reply. I get responses that do not address all of my questions, and no offers for any kind of real help. I had one person tell me (I don't remember who, but I'll have to check my trouble ticket responses to find out) that I COULD use the same username, but that I needed to wait 3-4 days for something on HR's end to be fixed. Then Brendan told me that I could not use my username, and I should just pick a new one. I am running 46 sites with that username, and really do want to have to switch settings just to get into my own site. There must be a solution.

I would even suggest that HR offer to move customers for a small fee ($5?). That way, we could keep our usernames, and not have to deal with anything by resetting mail settings.

I know I'm going on, but I think this is something that should seriously be considered.

Thanks,
Bryan Falchuk

I recently upgraded to the new contol panel(new servers) and I am using the same username and password to access the new CP.
Is this what you are referring to?
I will say that I have not noticed any improvement in performance so I am not sure that the effort to move your entire site is worth it.

Hi,

At some point, the old servers will be being shut down, and everyone will need to move off of them. This wont be for quite a while though.

My understanding is that HR can't pop the hard drives out and pop them in the new servers because not only do they not own the old servers, but the old servers are at a different building than the new ones. The new servers have more features and are cheaper for HR than the old ones. So the sooner HR can get its clientell moved over the less it has to pay, thus the less it will raise hosting rates in the future.

The new servers are at VDI and are in New Jersey whereas the old servers are Alabanza from Baltimore.

Even if they had the hard drives UPS'd to New Jersey I don't think they would work. THere are so many different features for one reason and also they are using a idfferent directory structure than Alabanza. (Which could probably be resolved anyway).

I was able to keep my username (and what sanity I have left) while moving to the new servers.

Guys, thanks for replying, but keep in mind that I'm not questioning the move per se, but the situation I'm having with my username. I heard from HR yesterday that this is the result of having a new account already on the new servers, so I would be trying to move my old one there and have 2 accounts with the same username. That's a fair explanation, however, there was a solution offered, but it doesn't work so far.

I WHOLLY agree with the move, and think that it stinks that I can't get off faster. I've used the new CP, and it is VERY nice...much better UI. And, Jeff, of course I don't want HR to have to pay more money...I'm an economist by training, I'm well versed in supply and demand and cost structures.

Hi Jason,
I have recently upgraded and everything went very smoothly with no problems. Just make sure you have all your present files backedup and ready to upload. Of course, if you have large site, cable or another hi speed connection it will make it happen much quicker.
Have no fear - its a piece of cake

there are SSH commands to move your site directly from Alabanza to VDI, doesn't take long no matter what modem you have cause it goes straight there.

The move isn't as fun as I (or many others) would like to think. THere can be problems, but that's why you keep the Alabanza stuff for a few days incase things don't work out.

In end, it's DEFINITELY worth the move.

Thanks for your help, I'm going to anticipate that everything will be okay, when it's moved as my site and domain is hosted and was bought from host rocket, so I think they will set everything up okay. Hey what do you think of my site at http://www.freebiesforever.com
Any feedback is welcome..
