Actually, I would personally like to see PostgreSQL installed. I really miss subselects and powerful stored procedures. PostgreSQL is also free and open source but much more powerful. I realize it requires recompilation of PHP but I believe it would be worth the time -- powerusers will love ya.

I dont see this happening because a large number of users already have scripts installed that use mysql and they would be deeply upset if they couldnt use their scripts anymore. (ie this forum, vBulletin, uses ONLY mysql)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having MySQL and PostgreSQL existing on the same machine. PHP and PERL modules have separate calles for the two databases. Furthermore, they both compile into PHP very nicely. I have them both running on my development machine without a glitch.

I am writing a web app and I am realizing how much less coding I'd be doing if I had PostgreSQL. Please install it.

Cobalt Raqs run both together just fine...

.....but the other host that I was comparing you to, offered it along with mySQL. I too would like to see it installed.

I doubt that the hr guys are gonna recompile all the servers just to give you this. I mean... It would be downtime for all the servers and would potentially cause problems...

Is there absolutely any chance of hr adding PostgreSQL? I really, really, really could use it.
There was a comment of difficulties having mysql + postgresql on the server --- after reading documentation and becoming acquainted with both dbs, I am sure someone would find having both on a server is not a problem.

I would also like to see this added to the system. maybe add it to a few servers and give customers the option to have both:)

I will see what I can do about getting it added when the new tech guy starts next week.

ummm, theoretically if you were worried about server load and postgres slowing the server couldnt you create a single server for all the servers and allow them to connect through it via the lan, you obviously have hubs and switches connecting the servers to the routers, surely you could have a single server acting as a postgres server, and have the few people that may want it to send in a ticket to get an account setup on the server. In the scripts, the host for postgres would then not be localhost like mysql but the server name, ie pgserver. The only problem is that php will still have to be recompiled.
PS, I did let you know about a script I had at http://coretech.digitalrice.com and you said you would put it on your site, however you havent at the mo, just reminding you :)

If I'm correct in reading that statement as "mysql is better than everything else," I suggest you read the following (http://openacs.org/philosophy/why-not-mysql.html). Granted, some of the problems mentioned have been addressed in MySQL 4.0, but that release is still beta and shall remain outside the boundaries of mainstream usage for quite some time.

If we move over to our clustered hosting solution that were thinking of doing, we will be able to offer just about every service anyone could ever want on dedicated boxes... We're working on developing a sweet high availability fully scalable hosting solution that will blow away the way virtual hosting is currently done.

I know that this is a super old post, but I wonder what support is thinking on this subject.
