View Full Version : 404 errors
Ok, this may be a really stupid question but i am gonna ask it. I keep getting these in my error log. Says file not found " favicon.ico" I typed the letters ".ico" into the help menu and it sent me to an area related to saving pages using the browsers preferences. Ok, but what does that mean to my site? My CP tells me I have gotten about 100 of those errors . If it's something that is setup wrong I would like to fix it. Any clues anyone???

It is a very simple question. :) Your site uses an icon to display instead of the html page graphic in the address bar. That favico.ico is not uploaded on the server, or cannot be found for one reason or another. Make sure that you don't have any code on your pages between the <head> tags that would call a favico.ico file.
ok, I got ya.. Now I have a question for you.. How would I put one or upload one? Suppose I wanted to put a musical note or a sound type icon. Is it a lengthy process? I started my site using netscape composer but I wanted to learn how to do it myself using html and notepad. So i had left the initial stuff netscape put in the heading.. that mozilla stuff, meta tags, etc.. I guess I should have just completely started from scratch but i figured that was supposed to be in there.. lol I really don't want to have to go in and edit all 30 pages :( But if it's not disrupting my visitors I should probably let it be?? (psstt.. can ya tell i'm new at this? )

It's fairly easy. If you don't want to do it, then your visitors won't see any problems or difference with your site. Those icons are called favico for a reason. Mainly because when someone adds your site to their favorites list, your icon appears beside your site's name. Which of course right away catches the user's eye. :)
Go to ZDNet.com - Downloads Section (http://www.zdnet.com/downloads) and search for "IconForge". Download that program or another one you see fit. Create your desired icon for your site then upload it. Make sure to name it favico.
Now, there is still one more issue to address. Unless you take a look at your files, and see where it's calling the favico.ico from, you won't know where to save it and upload it to. If it's in the images folder, then upload it there. If not, check to see where it is and experiment. Don't be afraid to... experimenting is good. :)
I checked my index page and predecessors.. there was nothing in there reffering to favicon etc.. i deleted all that mozilla stuff and meta info.. and i am still getting those 404 errors.. all i have on the page besides my links are tags.. html.. title.. body.. nothing out of the ordinary.. it's as basic as it gets so any ideas now?

No ideas. You must have had that in order for the facico.ico to want to appear. It doesn't magically appear by itself whenever it wants to. Sorry. :)

meri,
the reason why you're getting favicon.ico error messages is because when someone bookmarks your site in internet explorer, it will look for that file to display in your bookmarks list and also in the address box when one next goes to your site. you don't currently have that file. that's why you are receiving errors.
it does not need to be specified your meta tags for it to be placed in your favorites.
i.e. if you click on favorites, you will probably see different custom icons next to several bookmarks, i.e. realplayer, microsoft, msnbc, etc. each of those images is a different favicon.ico file.
