View Full Version : Online editing...

I would like to know why any changes I make to pages in my file editor don't show up for a day or so. I'm used to the free sites where it shows up automatically and am just wondering if this is how it's always going to be...It's annoying at best.
I have the most problem when I change my index page. I can delete all files relating to the old page and upload the new one as index.html but it still shows up as the old page when I type in my domain name (misabel.com).
Yet if I type in misabel.com/index.html the new page comes up....
I'm putting everything in the right folders and have spelled everything correctly so I can't see this as being an error on my part. Some help/an explination would be greatly appreciated.

...but I think that the old file you are seeing is what is stored in your browser's cache. It is therefore displaying from your hard drive instead of what is on the server. When you manually put in the address your browser is then forced to load the new version (which is what appears on the server after you finished editing).

I thought that too but i've tried reentering the address manually and i've deleted all files from temp internet files folder. The page still loads up as the old version.
I can tell it's loading from other than my computer because it takes longer than usual and I can see it reading from the server.

Anyway i'm grateful for your reply.

As soon as you upload files via telnet or FTP client, they are immediately viewable by the surfing public.

If you type in http://www.misabel.com after it loads (the old version of your index.html) hit the refresh or reload button on your browser.

I suspect you will see the new page.

Just looked at your site. Why aren't there any meta-tags on the index page?

http://www.topwebsite.co.uk/metatags.shtml

Expires - These meta tags instructs the visitors cache to refresh after the number of days indicated in the content value. This can be set to "0" if you have regularily updated content and want each visitor to be presented with the most up to date content.

META HTTP-EQUIV="expires" CONTENT="0"

Also if you have a host such as AOL or many others... they may have an ISP cache designed to cut bandwidth costs on their connection to the internet as well as speed up your access. The meta idea is the best presented I believe that was shown in the previous post. It should sway any cache of the file.

In Internet Explorer 5 and i think the previous versions as well...

I find that i must hold Control + Shift then click Refresh

to make the Browser do a TOTAL refresh...

Then i just started using META tags on my pages

I have the same problem I also found that my isp had its cache server configured wrong which cause the problem as well.

I'm very grateful to everyone for replying.
It must be my ISP as this problem has only just risen when I changed them. The same thing happens when I tried editing on my old host and for my guestbook.
I've tried everything but it just doesn't help.
The expires meta tag does help on my pages so thankyou for that suggestion.
Refreshing does nothing, no matter what I push.

(My tags weren't there yet because I only just put the layout up and it was put up before it was finished due to a request from a member of my site.)

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can go to Tools->Internet Options->General->Settings and tell IE to check for newer version "Every visit to the page." It doesn't use up that much extra bandwidth, and it makes sure that what you see is 100% up to date. =)
