View Full Version : Support: Selling Sub-Domains

I was wondering, since you currently don't offer a reseller plan or anything, is it ok with you if we "rent" sub-domains on our accounts like normal hosting? Since you can make FTP accounts only being accessable to sub-directories/sub-domains this would be good. I need to know if you guys (support) are ok with this or not...
I'm a website designer and design and develop websites for money, but also want to offer people a "sub-domain" hosting on my domain or a account with you guys..

Is there any way to limit space usage on the subdomains?

I don't think you can.
Maybe Support will make something like that in the future :)

I thought I saw something like that at http://cgi.resourceindex.com
Could you limit the space for each ftp account? If it was with a subdomain?

You'll have to look around the site I posted early. I haven't ever needed this kind of thing (I will in a month or so). If you find any that work and have those two features, lemme know I'd like to get a hold of it.

The scripts you looking at dont allow FTP access, and they limit space by forcing users to use a web interface to upload files. This is fine if you want to offer an extremely limited service to amatuer web builders but not many people will signup and if they do, few will use the space because it is so much less feature rich then other free services which use an actual platform designed just for the purpose.

Here is an ignorant question. What exactly do subdomains do?
I've searched through this board and on google and it seems like they can be used to direct someone to a site with an unwieldy name. Now if my site has a simple url like "allan.com" do I have any use for a subdomain? And if so, what use?
Thanks.

subdomains are in the form of:
members.yoursite.com
instead of
http://www.yoursite.com
yours is:
allan.com
you can have:
sexygirls.allan.com
and a new site will pop-up,
the files are stored in a sub-directory in your main site i.e.
public_html
public_html/sexygirls
you build that directory just like a regular site

Thanks. So if that is a separate directory, is it also a separate "website"?
Meaning if I type in a url "www.sexygirls.allan.com" will I get a different home page than if I type in "www.allan.com"? So far I don't. It is the same website but the url in the browser is the subdomain.
I guess what I'm asking is could it serve as sort of a "second site"?

yes, I don't know if you need to type www in front of the subdomain though.
Also make sure you enable subdomains in the control panel, this must be done after your domain is resolved (i.e. yoursite.com, instead of 123.546.32.88). You must send a trouble ticket for Brenden to do it though.
So in effect you get 10 websites for the price of one!!

Okay, new customer here as my old host is being shut down for legal problems.
I just uploaded my main index page so when it happens, if I'm not around at least people wont be going "huh?" when it changes over.
I sorta understand the sub domain concept but on my old host it was set up to use folders. IOW, they didnt offer subdoms.
example..
http://www.DragonLairs.net is main index page then links off it to http://www.dragonlairs.net/~elizz (~owr, etc)
I figured out what folders I needed to add into their folders to get the basic stuff working but not sure about what is needed here at HR.
Since I am still waiting on registerfly.com to get the name register away from bulkregister.com, I cant create sub domains yet, so any suggestions?

you will have to stick with the sub-dirs. for now. Also when you make a sub domain in the control panel, and the directory already exists, it becomes 'live' instantly. Point being if you have cascading style sheets or links pointing to ../www it wont work. You must make all the URL absolute (as they should be in case you want to change hosts quickly). Sub domains are great as you get so many more options, for example if you use FrontPage to publish one sub, It may not work on another because it likes to have control over permissions. I worked on a script for a long time and everything was great, till I ADDED MY SUB-DIR AS A SUB-WEB. Then FP choked and wouldn't let me publish in http mode. That sucks cause the extensions don't work properly if you ftp the files. FP likes to play with ,htaccess and chmod dirs. for ya. I like the interface to FP, but I'm growing out of it. I got Dreamweaver 4 the other day, and that's going to be my incentive to use formmail, PHP,Perl, and MYSQL. Sounds like I have a lot of time sitting in front of this damn box.

You really don't have to change anything at all If you happy with the struture. Keep the dir. names http://www.yoursite.com/~foobar, if it aint broke don't fix it.

I stopped using FP a LOOOOONG time ago, its more trouble than its worth. The pages it builds have bad syntax (VERY bad syntax), sometimes dont display correctly in all browsers, its near impossible to design a site the way one wants it to look. Dreamweaver on the other hand is a great tool. The key is not DEPENDING on the WYSIWYG editor. You really do have to go into your HTML files and clean it up after you design it. CGI/PHP/Perl... theyre all VERY powerful and much more rewarding than any FP extension could ever be. You will be doing things with your site you would have never dreamed when you look beyond the scope of frontpage:)

Graham,
Thats good to know, thanks, but I still dont understand what I need to put in my folders then. I'm taking they should be created in the public_html directory, by just doing a "copy folder" command from the ctrl panel?
Oh yeah, right now I am not using anything but Arachnophilia, good lil wysiwyg, as my sites are more hobby oriented, not business. I do have access to visual page but I havent delved into it deeply yet.
One reason I started looking at HR was I love the ctrl panel, still confusing me a bit but thats mainly due to the fact I cant fully play with it yet, not HR's fault.
Giant kudos to the staff that designed that ctrl panel, majorly awesome.
