A lot of very sensitive information passes through email. For this reason, it is critical to find an email management tool that is safe and secure, to protect oneself against corporate espionage or identity theft. A major selling point of an email management tool is its ability to filter out viruses and spyware. These things can both corrupt files as well as leave "Trojan horses" on a computer that can read or steal important information.

One argument against using a web-based email management system is that it makes email more prone to intrusion by hackers. This is not true. In fact, an in-house server is more likely to be broken into by hackers than an outsourced management system.

The difference is that an outsourced management tool will be monitored 24 hours a day. It is impossible to monitor an in-house system on a permanent basis. It is simply not feasible for an in-house IT management team to monitor the email system 24/7 to see if it has been breached by hackers.
