If I were to sign up for either business plan could I port my main number as well as my fax number, so I could keep both numbers the same as I have now? I've searched and searched and have not found any information relating ports of fax numbers.

I don't believe there are any restrictions on VT's end for this. It would depend, though, on whether your numbers can port away from your current provider.

What is the difference between a voice number and a FAX number, other than you plugged in a FAX machine into one of them?

No difference. The OP was just describing the two types of numbers they want to port in for the equivalent use on the VT side. ;)

With VoIP, the fax line is setup (optimized) for data calls versus voice calls.

There is no differnce on a POTS line.

I'm not worried about porting away from my current provider, just making sure Viatalk will allow a ported fax number (for example providing a fax number and then requiring that you have to use that particular number). If so it looks like I'll be signing up some time this month :D

yeah just port away, then submit a ticket asking them to apply the 'fax compatible settings' to that line. You should have no problem faxing.

What has been everyone's success rate with faxing with and without the "fax compatible settings"?

Mine has been fairly decent. I do not have any special settings configured on my PAP2T other than the defaults with regards to faxing. As long as I keep my fax resolution at Standard, I don't seem to have much trouble faxing even at 14.4. But YMMV.

Do you use a fax machine or do you fax from your computer?

I haven't faxed from my computer in ages. :) I use a Brother MFC-420CN.

Yes, you may submit a request to transfer a fax line into our service. However, VT cannot port 'Distinctive Ring' fax numbers. It would need to be an independent line from the main voice line.
