View Full Version : PAP2T static IP reset? (DHCP OFF/ON)

It seems like every time I go into the config for the VT Linksys PAP2T voip box, it resets it to DHCP being on. I have tried to go into the System tab, and set it to DHCP : No, and put in the IP I want, the netmask and Gateway (router IP) but it seems like it gets reset automatically.
I need to set it to static so it locks in with the router - because the router config doesn't seem to have a way to lock it in on an IP address. - Everytime it resets, it gives the PAP2T a different IP address, and then I lose VT service.
Any ideas?
thanks!

Did you go to the "Provisioning" tab, and set "Provision Enable:" to "no"?
If/when provisioning is on (the default for VT supplied adapters), VT will send their (default) setting to the adapter every few hours (resetting any settings you may have made in the mean time). But if you turn off "Provisioning", than any of your settings will stay as they were (and VT will no longer be sending setting updates to your adapter).

Just in case you do not have the admin password for the PAP2T...
You will not see the provisioning tab on the PAP2T without the admin password.
Call VT and ask them to turn off the auto-provisioning setting on your account. They will ask you for the static IP address you want to use.
I think xxx.15.1.02 thru xxx.15.1.99 are available for static IP addresses. The main router probably uses xxx.15.1.100 thru xxx.15.1.149 for assigning IP's to other devices in your household.
Then set the static IP address on the PAP2 and set DHCP to disabled and these setting should stick.
Finally, assign port forwarding on the main router for the PAP2T's static ip address you chose.
You might as well ask VT for the admin password while you have them on the phone for future firmware upgrades.

The available addresses available depends on the subnet that your router is configured to give out. Different makes/models of routers use different subnets.
I better way to go about it is to first get your admin password. Then turn off remote provisioning. You can then set up your static addressing, make sure it plays well with the rest of your network setup. Then you can call ViaTalk, and ask them to make the appropriate address change. Wait a little while, then turn provisioning back on (assuming you wish ViaTalk to still do the automatic provisioning).
At this point, your addressing should 'stick'...

You will also need to set the DNS. I would suggest setting it the same as your ISP. If you don't know them you can put your routers (gateway) address in for the DNS, it will then use your ISP's DNS servers.

I've had Vonage for about 2.5 years and the automatic changes by ViaTalk just don't make sense to me. I understand that ViaTalk is trying to make configuration as brain dead as possible for folks that are new to VoIP, but continuing to push the DHCP setting to "ON" seems counter-productive. The user has the admin password and is attempting to solve a problem. VoIP isn't for everyone, so I'm not sure trying to take control out of the user's hands is the best approach. I know my network better than anyone else. I have since disabled the automagic provisioning on my PAP2T and I'm happier with the service.
The provisioning by ViaTalk includes DNS servers that I'm not familiar with. Is there any advantage to using the provisioned DNS servers rather than my ISPs?

No as a matter of fact the provisioned DNS could be a disadvantage. They provision them so everyone has ones that work. Using your ISP's is better because in many cases they will respond faster, and if one or more are ever down your ISP will auto-route your traffic to a working one.

Then chalk-up another disadvantage to pre-provisioning.
I also changed my primary time server to one of the local sources in Boulder, CO, while I was at it.
Looks like I'll be cancelling my Vonage service next week.;)

They are sending you their DNS servers because they support their dynamic routing features (not all DNS servers do).
You can try running this against your ISP's DNS server and see how it responds:
% nslookup -q=srv _sip._udp.richmond-1.vtnoc.net
They may update these for you to your ISP's if you ask. There's a bunch of settings that I have been changing that get changed back that I may be asking them to auto-provision for me (syslog/debug servers, Input/output gain, etc).

My internal DNS servers (Windows 2003 Server Domain) forward to my ISP's servers. Using the syntax above, with the exception of the "%";
C:\>nslookup -q=srv _sip._udp.richmond-1.vtnoc.net
Server: dc1.XXXXXXX.com
Address: 192.168.1.99
Non-authoritative answer:
_sip._udp.richmond-1.vtnoc.net SRV service location:
priority = 10
weight = 1
port = 5060
svr hostname = houston-1.vtnoc.net

Looks OK to me.;)

If you submit a support ticket listing the Static IP, Gateway, and Netmask we will set it into the configuration file which will flash the adapter every 10 minutes with updates.

We covered this issue (Whose DNS servers to use) a while back on the other forum and found a few drawbacks to both approaches. It might be worth searching over there for the thread. I remember trying Comcast's and having problems.
