View Full Version : Changed routers. now: BAD AUDIO

I just changed from a Netgear router to a Belkin Pre-N router, and the audio is very clunky - cuts out every other second of audio both ways.

I read the directions on the viatalk site for setting up virtual DMZ for the Belkin router, but that has not helped...

any ideas?
thanks

Bad/defective router?

Bad/defective CAT5 cable?

everything else works fine - internet, wireless, etc.
just viatalk is not working.

If that router has QoS, make sure the PAP2 has highest priority. You probably aready set a static DHCP IP for the PAP2. You might need to turn off the SIP ALG.
Of course, since you have a router to compare to, swap back to double check that it is the router.

That router has a mean firewall on it that does not play nice with VoIP. You have to put your adapter in the DMZ.

As an after thought. Make sure you set a USER password for your ATA after putting it in the DMZ. This will require anyone who stumbles upon your IP Address to enter a password before being able to see your name and home phone number, etc.

done and done.
but it still doesn't work.
is there another protocol or port that needs to be opened up for Viatalk?

IMO I would dump the Belkin Pre-N. As Brian states the firewall will give you hell. I had the Belkin 54G, MIMO and the N1 and they all gave me fits with VOIP to no avail. The DMZ would work sometimes and sometimes not causing either no outgoing or incoming. I've since switche to a Linksys 54GL and those issues stopped.

If your adapter is in the DMZ, opening any ports would be overkill and pointless. I think taylor may have hit this one for you. The linksys with 3rd party tomato firmware would be the way to go. I hope you are within 30 days or whatever and still get a refund on the Belkin.

Thanks all,

I actually got it working great - perfect audio and all, but then, overnight, it lost the connection and the phone line light on the Linksys PAP2T box went off (which was the next problem I had)... so it appears that it intermittently loses its connection to the Belkin Pre-N router --- although I did check and the IP # for the PAP2T was still the same... (there doesn't appear to be a way to lock it in on the Belkin Pre-N so that every time the PAP2T connects it will have the same IP address, and that appears to be a problem, too...

anyway, i think you're right and I'm going to have to dump the Pre-N, unless there's a way to configure the PAP2T admin or the Pre-N admin that fixes this.

It still works perfectly when I go back to the netgear router. Hooks up no problem.

I can't see much else to try in the Belkin admin... and am waiting to hear from Viatalk tech support on if there's anything that can be done on PAP2T configuration...

thanks!

You can assign a static IP in the PAP2 on the system tab. I'm not sure why but Belkin does not have address reservation.

Here's what I did so I could use the Belkin N-1. I just love the range and speed of N and couldn't bring myself to get rid of it. I have my Modem connected to my Netgear router. I turned off wireless on the netgear. I then have my VoIP adapters, and my Belkin N-1 connected to the netgear via Ethernets. I have no wired clients on my Belkin and use strictly for wireless. Just be sure to set the network ranges far enough apart for each router. My Belkin is set to 192.168.100.x and netgear is 192.168.0.x
