View Full Version : VT solid after disabling dynamic routing failover

Hello,
My VT was losing it's connection every day, several times a day:
no dialtone,
"Registration state: can't connect to login server" message on PAP2 status page.
I would have to reboot my PAP2 router to get the service online again.
This proves to be a problem if we have to get hold of the kids while we are at work, emergencies, Etc.
To try to solve the problem I setup a static IP address on the PAP2 with the help of tech support. They disabled auto-provisioning and I also setup port forwarding. But the connection still was lost once or twice a day.
I re-connected our phones to my Vonage router (in the process of porting number over). My wife said that the house phone has to be solid otherwise this service (VT) is not acceptable. I agreed but asked her to give it one more chance.
For the heck of it I disabled "dynamic failover routing" from "Server Config" on the VT account management page and set my server to be the SW US server in static mode.
The service has not crashed for 2 days and 6 hours now.
If the service continues to be solid then I will re-connect my phones to the VT server and forward my Vonage calls to the VT number.
The VT service is so much clearer (not to mention cheaper) that I am hoping that it continues to function properly.
I will update this thread on Friday to give a status report.
Hope this might help somebody else down the road.

Mine has always been set to dynamic and never had a problem either.

Don't get me wrong. When I setup my account I enabled the dynamic feature too. That would be a valuable option if a server tanked.
I disabled the feature just as an experiment to see if the service stayed active longer.
It has been solid for over 3 days now. Before I disabled the feature the service would stop working at least twice a day.
I'm glad your service is working with the feature enabled but if anyone else out there notices the same behavior maybe they could try what I did.

i'm noticing the same, the PAP2T being unable to register (has happened twice in the last two days).
my wife is similar, doesn't like broken phone service (as would anyone)
I'm going to try the disable dynamic failover also (you can verify that it is off by going into the advanced configuration pages for your line, and seeing that "Use DNS SRV" is off) will update after a few days and report if that improved things.

I disabled it from viatalk's client billing web page under VT_Advanced Features/Server Config.

yes, that is how I disabled it also. however, after making that change you can confirm that it really is off in the PAP2T by looking at the page I mentioned above.

I'm not seeing that setting on the pap2 even after switching to Advanced View. My firmware is Firmware Version: 3.1.15(LS).
I have tabs on it for Info/System/User1/User2.
What tab do you see that setting on?
Thanks

It has been running solid for 6 days with no interruptions.
So far, So good!

Firmware has been updated in the Pap2T to 5.1.3. You can download it from the linksys website.

advanced view should have a "Line 1" page, you'd see it there (if you have a 2nd line, you'd see it on the Line 2 page)

The service made it to almost 7 full days.
I got the admin password from VT and upgraded my firmware to 5.13LS.
After that, I logged into the router and used the admin password...from the advanced view...the Line1 tab appeared and I was able to see the "Use DNS SRV" (off).
If the router is up for another week I might get crazy and turn the dynamic routing back on to see if the firmware upgrade made a difference. In the mean time I'm sitting here fat, dumb and happy.

I had the same issues as you and had them switch me to a static IP for my network, even though I was already setting up a static DHCP reservation, I didn't think this would have much affect. Well, my service hasn't gone down since, and last night I re-enabled dynamic service and haven't had any issues. I'm wondering if it is because my router does it's own DNS (3rd party WRT54G firmware) which doesn't support the "nslookup -q=srv _sip._udp.richmond-1.vtnoc.net" command. When they setup the static address, they set the DNS servers to be their own. Not sure if your DNS servers before supported such commands or not.
