View Full Version : Clicking on the line

I just signed with ViaTalk, switching from Vonage. The Vonage sound quality has been good, but we've been experiencing a lot of outages, and they lack some features that ViaTalk has.
When I called customer service yesterday to get some additional information, I was hearing some clicking on the line. Since a friend of mine told me that the quality of the sound is better than Vonage, I dismissed this as a bad line. I got my temporary number (didn't get the PAP yet), and was playing around with the voice mail options. I called my own line, entered my pin, and was in the menu system. I was hearing those clicking sounds again! I'm concerned that when I get the adapter, the clicking will remain..
Anyone know how to get rid of the clicking? what may be causing it? I want to make sure it's resolved before my number gets ported over from Vonage.
Thanks!

depends on what you mean by clickign, sometimes bandwidth issues can cause that kind of issue...
make sure you have all the right ports forwarded to your router, and it is set up with QoS to give priority to VoIP data...

I called customer service today from work on a POTS line and could hear a lot of clicking at VT, to the point of it being a distraction and difficult in maintaining the conversation. It had me wondering about the quality of service I might have when my equipment shows up.

Also it sounds like you are using a softphone since you don't have your ATA yet. Check your Windows Firewall (if you're using windows). Good Idea to disable it or open the ports on it too.

not using a softphone.. simply calling my voice mail from my existing phone line.. tried with Vonage and IO Voice (optonline) with the same results. I have a ticket open with VT tech support..

Interesting. I called my VT voice mail from my VT phone and I can hear a clicking, but it is very soft. From my VT phone I called my cell phone. I can hear the same clicking. From my VT phone I simply picked up the handset and hit one number on the phone keypad to silence the dialtone and I can hear the same clicking. It seems to be in a pattern most of the time almost like a heart beat.... click click.. paaaaauuuuusee .. click click .. paaaaaaaauuusseee .. click click.
From my cell phone I call my VT voice mail, I could not hear the clicking. Could just be the range of sound available via cell phone is different so its just not audible, have no idea really.

How much upload bandwidth do you have for your VoIP (i.e. total upload bandwidth, minus any upload used by the rest of the computers on your LAN)?
I ask, as that's exactly the behavior I would expect if you have almost (but not quite) enough upload bandwidth for VoIP. It's been my experience that when you are right at the edge of needed bandwidth (typically upload bandwidth, as most of us have more than enough download bandwidth), you will get a lot of little (often well under a second each) "drop outs" in your voice. And these mini drop outs often produce a "click" when they occur...

384 up, nothing else happening on my network at that time. I haven't listened again for the clicks. I did use the phone a few times since then and thinking back I didn't notice anything that was annoying me from the phone call I was on. When I posted on the 20th that I heard the clicks, the only reason I picked up the phone at that time was to listen for clicks.

I think that clicking sound can be caused by electrical pulses.
