View Full Version : Voice Mail Message Rings

I followed another post on this board and filed a ticket to turn on the Voice Mail Indicator. Much to my chagrin, now my phone gives a very short ring once a while non-stop. What I wanted is actually to have my phone's message indicator light to turn on when there is a VM. Can this be done? Anyone can help?
I'm using a Uniden TRU9485.

This is the same thing that is happening to me. I too want the phone's message indicator light to flash only.
Any suggestions?

Ring settings for VMWI are controlled by your ATA. Are you a provisioned user or BYOD? If provisioned, submit a ticket and explain the situation and have them make some adjustments to your ATA. This may be related to the "VMWI Ring Splash Len" and "VMWI Ring Policy" in the ATA. I will try to test my settings later to see if I can replicate what is happening to your phone (I have a Uniden TRU9465). Do you have admin access to your ATA? If so, you may want to look at these settings on the "User" tab in your ATA. If not, if you are a provisioned user, you can request the admin password via a ticket and test some of these settings yourself. HTH.

Thanks for the help. Setting the VMWI Ring Splash Len to 0 worked!

You beat me with your reply. Just got done testing and was able to replicate what you were experiencing. My length has been set to zero. I increased the value to 5 seconds for my testing. My kids didn't know I was testing and came into the room and told me the phone was acting funny now. lol.
Glad to see it is working o.k. for you now. :)

It was about 2 AM when I was testing this change at my house.
The wife was not happy when the phone started ringing! ;)

Hi, all
I'm using Viatalk's adapter. So I guess I'll have to file a ticket to set VMWI Ring Splash to zero? But that sounds like it will only turn off the rings. Will I get the indicator light to turn on when there is VM? Right now I only have the rings no lights.

You will still need to request via a ticket (or call VT) to have them activate the VMWI for you.

For some reason the half-second ring seems to be the default choice and I can't for the life of me figure out why. No where else that I've seen works this way with the exception of one PBX system I used years ago.

The Linksys/Sipura default is off (VMWI Ring Splash = 0). VT configures it to 0.5.

Not sure why yours was configured to 0.5. Mine was provisioned to 0 when I signed up for VT service).

Configured last month by VT. Figure that the provisioning file also was made at that time. How long ago did you get your ATA from VT?. Obviously somewhere between those two dates, it was changed.

Curious as to whether yours is the exception or now the rule. Sounds more like a mistaken provisioning.

If mine was a mistake, then why all the recent complaints about phones splash ringing when there is a VM? Obviously, I'm not the only one who had VMWI Ring Splash set to 0.5.
Seems as it was changed along the way, and I was just trying to narrow down when the change may have taken place.

I started service with VT almost a year ago. So that is a pretty big range. :)

It's been almost a year now for me and my VMWI Ring Splash was set to 0.5 until I opened a ticket to get them to change it. :)

Beginning to look like you are the exception, sbradshaw. :p

When I first called to mention it back in August support initially didn't know what I was talking about. Likely a new customer service rep but that told me this wasn't something they all had to deal with all the time.

I've been with VT since July and the ring splash was not provisioned for me.

Nope, the adapter's default for that setting is 0.5 (I just checked my old Sipura manual to make sure).
So I'm guessing that VT just left that setting at the LinkSys/Sipura default. Now why Sipura chose to design their firmware with a default of 0.5 (vs the much more useful default of 0) is beyond me. But however useless 0.5 is for a default, that was the default that Sipura designed into their adapter.
BTW: I've got my adapter's "VMWI Ring Splash Len:" setting also set to 0 (that setting is on the "User x" tabs, for anyone looking for it). Because like so many people, I'm happy for my phone to flash that I've got a VM waiting, but I really do NOT want any "ring" associated with that VM...

I would like the opposite. I want the phone to ring occasionally to let me know to check VM. Tonight, we got two phone calls, we were not on the phone, no outages in the log files, yet the calls went to VM. Anyway, didn't know they messages were there until picking up the phone and getting the shutter dial tone.
How do I get the short ring to happen? I have these settings in USER1 in admin screens...
VMWI Ring Splash Len: .5
VMWI Ring Policy: New VM Available
From the previous posts, seems like I should be getting rings.

Check your MWI Serv & VMWI Serv on the line 1/2 tab are both to Yes too. Not sure which one or if both make it work, but with both set to yes it gives a half ring every few min.

the mwi was yes, then i set vmwi to yes, but still no ring.

Try making it a longer ring. Some phones (I have one) the first ring for whatever reason just doesn't get to the phone. Valid settings are 0-10 seconds.
You do have an unread message in box right? Not just setting the adapter to yes for message waiting? That trick won't work.

I have a VM in my inbox and that told the pap2t to say there is a message waiting. The shutter dial tone turns on and off properly.
I adjusted splash to 10 seconds and still no ring.

Ok, got the VM ring splash working.
When testing originally, I left a new voice mail on my VT line and then proceeded to tweak the settings.
Looks like the VM needs to be new after the VMWI SERVICE is set to YES and VMWI splash at .2 ..... I deleted the VM and then left a new VM after tweaking the settings.
Discovered something I didn't expect. The ring splash appears to happen every 10 minutes (600 seconds) when the pap2t re-registers. I was expecting it to repeat based on the VMWI Refresh Intvl: of 30 seconds. Every 10 minutes is likely enough.
Brian188.....Then, I further tweaked the splash length. My old mechanical ringer style phone would respond to a 0.1 second ring, but the electronic cordless has to have 0.2 to ring.
thanks for the help :)

oops....now I am really confused.
I opened a new thread...
http://forums.hostrocket.com/showthread.php?t=21267
but am mentioning it in case it might be related.
Now, I cannot keep it from ringing, even when there is no voice mail at all. I even did a power cycle to the pap2t after deleting all VM and, still, I get an occasional ring splash. So, for the moment, I turned off VMWI service so I can sleep.

Try turning on the "Ring on no new VM" option. Not sure if that will help or not. It is used for turning off the VM light on some phones that require a ring before the FSK signal to turn off the light is sent.

i did have that on for a while yesterday because my old caller-id box would not clear the message waiting without the cancel ring. Set either way, I get random ring splashes when there is no voice mail.

Thru a ticket, I can now delete VM's again like normal.
But, I still have the problem that when there is no VM, I will still get an occasional ring splash. If I imediately pick up the phone, I get a shutter tone. If I wait another 30 seconds, the shutter tone is gone. This happens a couple times per hour. Router logs don't show anything near the event. Same result whether or not the "ring on no new VM" is on or off, except I get a second ring 30 seconds later if ON.
