Hiya,
I'd just stumbled on this the other day after fumbling with trying to get SJPhone working on my Windows Mobile 5 Samsung i730 (verizon) the other day.
It's Alpha: 1.0, but I've tried it using Wi-Fi connection on my mobile phone with Viatalk VOIP and it works! And it wasn't nearly as hard to set up as SJPhone... very simple interface.

It even taps into your contacts to make calling easy... So why use this? I can get my home phone to ring whereever there is wi-fi, even if I don't have my computer on me... :)
cheers!

Sounds like you had too little "upload bandwidth".
Remember, you need around 100k of upload (real bandwidth, not advertised "up to" bandwidth) to be properly heard by the person on the other end of the call...

I used xten lite for ppc and it worked great (with wifi or excellent evdo signal). The only limit I've found is it only supports one softfone account.

If you want to use multiple providers, when your VoIP device (in this case your softphone) only supports a single VoIP account, you could always use the http://www.voxalot.com service.
VoXaLot lets you get around the problem of only one account/provider on your VoIP device (in your case your softphone), because it can act as an intermediary between your VoIP device and your VoIP accounts. i.e. setup several VoIP accounts/providers of your choice, and then access them by only having your single VoXaLot account configured on your VoIP device.
NOTE:
Another option would be to setup your own http://www.asterisk.org server (with your various VoIP accounts on it), and then have your softphone connect to your asterisk server. This would give you the same flexibility as the VoXaLot approach, but it would be more work to setup. The main advantage of VoXaLot in this case, is you avoid the hassles of setting up (and configuring) your own IP PBX, because VoXaLot has essentially already done that work for you.

How do you get EVDO to work? This would be a great minute extender for my cell phone.

It's really not worth using voip w/ EVDO. I've been able to get a few clear calls when I had a great signal and low latency but not often enough. I mostly stick to wifi since I got it on campus and I find signals everywhere.
