Hi, everyone
After much struggle, I finally can post here. I'm hoping someone can help me with this nagging problem.
I'm using Viatalk with my unlocked RT31P2. The adapter registered with Viatalk and I can receive incoming calls and speak with the caller with no problem. However, when I pick up my phone, immediately I hear the warning tone that you typically hear when you leave the phone off the hook for a while. There is never dial tone and I can not dial numbers as such.
The adapter is connected to my home router, with a few ports openned, and the phone is connected directly to Line 1 port and I have tried a different phone I have, same problem.
I have talked with Viatalk support and they say everything looks right from their side. I kind of agree. Given I can receive calls and talk, I think the network setup is probably fine. I wonder if there is some phone related setting I changed accidentally on my adapter. I'd be glad if there is someone who is using this adapter with no problem, maybe we can compare your settings with mine? Or some other ideas?
Thanks alot!

I would try a factory reset. Hold the button for 10sec. or so.

If a re-set doesn't help...
In your ATA there should be field called Dial Tone. Is it set to: 350@-10,440@-10;10(*/10/1+2) This could be under a Regional tab or something similar. It would be in a grouping called Call Progress Tones, or something similar. I don't know your specific ATA config.
If not what is it set to? Also if you leave the phone off the hook for awhile does it change tones? Or just go silent, etc.?

Unfortunately, a factory reset will put the adapter back to Vonage. It's not a breeze to unlock the adapter. So I don't want to reset unless there is really really no other way.

Brian,
If I leave the phone actually off hook for a while, the tone changes to even more rapid one. I don't really know what the second tone is named. I'm not even sure I'm calling the first tone correctly.
But you might be right on the dial tone setting. My dial tone is a bit different from what you gave. I attached a pic to show my settings.
I'll try this tonight when I get home. Hopefully this will end my misery:)

Or just invest in a new unlocked adapter. Your savings will more than pay for a adapter.

I have spent way more time than it's worth if you look at it from the financial side. The matter has now turned personal.
It bothers me when I don't know why it doesn't work.

What you will want to change is the last part (*/0/1+2) to (*/10/1+2). Don't worry about the two -19 after the @ signs. These essentially just control volume. You can adjust them to higher number such as -10 or lower -22, etc. if it sounds better to you.
Your off-hook warning tone look about correct though.

I'll do that. What else do you see that might need change here?

Brian,
Unfortunately, changing that dial tone did not help. The problem is still here.
Can you send me a copy of your adapter's settings, like the tones, regional, and SIP?
Thanks.

Well, that's my mistake, now that I think about it a little more changing those settings at the end will have little to no effect. The actual tone comes from the combination of two frequencies. The two are as follows:
Freq. 1 = 350 Hz @ -10 dBm and
Freq. 2 = 440 Hz @ -10 dBm
The end part in parentheses relates to the cadence and length of the tone. Yours 10(*/0/1+2) is telling the adapter the tone is 10s long using frequency 1 & 2.
So, I'm not too sure what is causing your issue.
I have plans to unlock my RPT300 this weekend from vonage. It has the same settings as your RT31P2. I'll let you know what I find.
By the way how are your other dial tones such as MW stutter, call forwarding, etc.
My call progress tones are attached, they should be the same as yours or close.

Brian,
I posted the rest of my Regional settings. Please take a look and let me know if you see anyting.
If you happen to have questions on unlocking, I'd try to help. Setting up all the servers correctly is a pain. But it seems you know much more than I do already.:)
Let me know how your unlocking goes. I don't want to admit defeat on my tech skills and buy a Viatalk adapter yet.

How did it go?:D

Didn't finish it. I got the passwords changed and the firmware downloaded, but got busy with other things. And I didn't get updated yet. Guess I play around some this week.

Sounds like your adapter may have lost "registration" with the VT servers. I don't have any experience with your specific model of adapter, but on many (most?) of the LinkSys adapters, when you lose the "registration" they will give you a "fast busy" on the phone (unless you have "Make Call Without Reg:" set to "yes"), to warn you that you can't make any calls. And this sounds like exactly the symptoms you are describing!
While it can often be difficult to avoid this problem totally, there are some adapter settings you can modify to help the adapter recover from this quicker (in a few minutes time, vs the normal case of several hours recovery time). Here are the settings that I recommend you adjust (assuming your adapter has these settings, like my SPA-3000 does):
Settings on the "Line" tab:
Make Call Without Reg: yes
Register Expires: 450
Settings on the SIP tab:
Reg Min Expires: 50
Reg Max Expires: 1200
Reg Retry Intvl: 66
Reg Retry Long Intvl: 150
BTW: The reason why power cycling lets you make a call, is that power cycling will immediately cause the adapter to go through it's full registration cycle again (which has a good chance of succeeding). However, if you make the changes I mentioned above, your adapter should be in a better position to detect this problem, and again initiate the required "registration" attempt without you having to power cycle the adapter to accomplish this!
