After 2 months of trying to set up Rt31P2 and calling Tech support I've come to realize two things one 99% of things wrong were on my side VIA RT31P2 and number two Tech support is only as good as the person who receives your question. I recommend sending all request multiple times I guarantee you'll get different answers from each one of them.

Now for the setup:
1. Log into your router using a web browser http://192.168.15.1 username: leave blank Pass: admin
2. Go to Voice Tab then Line 1 tab

DispName: Doesn't matter Via Talk overwrites it leave it blank
UserId: Phone Number ex. 15556668888
AuthUser: Phone Number ex. 15556668888
AuthPass: This is your password supplied by viatalk
RegProxy: This is your proxy address mine is ex. richmond-1.vtnoc.net

Go to Bottom of Page and select "SAVE SETTINGS" the router will now reset and with any luck will activate phone line 1.

You should not have to change anything else on this tab unless you have voice quality issues then try adjusting "Voice Quality" at the bottom of the page to "Good" and resave.

3. Goto http://192.168.15.1/Voice_adminPage.htm
4. Goto Regional Tab

Scroll to bottom and "Set Local Date" ex. 03/07
Next "Set Local Time" ex. 01/02
Select Save Settings
router will reboot
after 8 seconds you should be back at http://192.168.15.1/Voice_adminPage.htm

5. Goto Line 1 tab

Scroll to bottom and change "DTMF Tx Method:" to inband
Select Save Settings
EDITED: 01-07-2009 for some reason the phone stopped responding to my inputs so i upgraded the firmware to the latest (3.1.9 (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859882761&packedargs=sku%3DRT31P2&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=8276182761B01&displaypage=download#versiondetail)) to no avail. Then changed "DTMF Tx Method:" to "Auto" saved settings and presto all is right with the world again

You have now set up your RT31P2 to:
1- Display the correct time on your callerid
2- Allow you to enter numbers when prompted in call (ex. voice mail password)

Good Luck the router is a bit buggy at times especially when saving settings if it fails or gives you a weird message hit the back key and try it again. Other then that it seems to be working well now every once in a while I'll have to reset it by unplugging it but i think this is normal for voip routers.

Ps. I am not a power writer so i apologize for anything that does not make sense and my run on sentences. :D

congrats!

l'd to suggest a few things
instead of setting your ATA's local time, tz time, as well as DST
since you're a BYOD'er, you'll need to manually set dyn./failover routing

cheers,

Tyanny,

Are you using a RT31P2? I'm having some trouble with mine, stated in a newer thread. Do you think you can share your adapter's settings with me so I can try to find why I'm getting no dial tone?

Thanks.

While connectivity issues can be caused by several variables, if you are having issues with connecting on the default ports, I suggest changing the SIP Port. I generally change it to 5080.

My problem is bit more difficult. It's not that I don't have connectivity. See this

Hi Tranney,

I bought an unlocked Linksys RT31P2 AL. It's firmware is 1.25/2.10Llc. I went to the http://192.168.15.1/Voice_adminPage.htm to set line 1. After fill the data for vbuzzer, the setting cannot be saved. It displayed

Settings are failed!

Some settings are not correct or router still restarting. Please try it again.

This remind text is always displayed whatever I fill the data or not. After further test, I found that the content on "Regional, Line1 and Line2" tabs cannot be saved even just after the factory default. Other functions work fine. It looks like the file of Voice_adminPage.htm does not work properly.

Do you know the reason? Is it related to firmware, or can it be solved by upgrading the firmware to lastest version?

Thank you in advance for you reply

Reid

Did your adapter come unlocked from the factory, or did it come from the factory "locked", and someone "unlocked it" later?

If that latter, than that may be your problem. Because many (most?) VoIP devices that were once locked, were never fully "unlocked" right. Essentially, someone tried to "hack into the lock" and was only partially successful at removing the lock (leaving all sorts of problems behind). They then sold the "unlocked" adapter to some poor schmuck, who thought they were buying a truly open/"unlocked" adapter (when really they were buying a "locked" adapter that someone had partially jimmied the lock on). Of course, "the bad news" is that there are all too many of these (poorly) "unlocked" devices for sale on eBay, and other second hand stores. :(

Hi DracoFelis,

Thanks for your reply. It sounds a very reasonable analysis. The deivce I bought is unlocked by someone and sold on the ebay.

If I download the firmware of lastest version from Linksys website and make it upgraded, can the problem be fixed? Will the unlocked file be re-locked?

Please send me a reply when you have time.

Thank you very much!

Reid

It's a YMMV thing. But my guess would be that it may not help, and there is a real chance that the attempt may get your adapter "locked" again.

The problem is, the techniques that the factory uses to "lock" the adapters, go deeper than simply flashing with a different firmware version can usually fix. And so often when an adapter is "unlocked" by some 3rd party hacking into the hardware, a portion of that (former) lock remains. And while you may get lucky and never get bit by that (mostly dormant) piece of "lock" remaining, your problems of things not working quite right are far from the first reports I've heard of such problems with so-called "unlocked adapters". And I've also heard of a lot of people who have had their adapter "lock" again, when they did something seemingly innocent (such as "reset" their adapter, or try to upgrade the firmware). So IMHO a so-called "unlocked" adapter is "a ticking time bomb", in that you never know when it will have problems and/or stop working entirely!

And that's why I (personally) figure the cost savings of getting a used "unlocked" adapter just isn't "worth it", given how inexpensively you can get new "unlocked from the factory" adapters if you hunt around (for example, a new unlocked from the factory SPA-1001can be had for around $60 from http://www.voxilla.com , if you can't find them anywhere else). But that's my opinion, and clearly a lot of people disagree with me, as there are a lot of posts on some forums about how to "unlock" an adapter, and cheering about all the money they are saving (never mind the time and hassles that doing this makes for them).

NOTE: An adapter that came from the factory as "unlocked", was designed for users to have full access to its controls. So such new "unlocked" (from the factory) adapters don't have those hidden problems associated with a former "lock". Like any equipment, they might have their "bugs" in the firmware (in which case a firmware upgrade may very well fix the problem), but they won't have the extra problems associated with a "lock" that has been removed. It's only the so-called "unlocked" adapters (that were previously "locked") that have those extra problems. Sadly, most of the adapters on eBay are probably of the latter variety (as the eBay sellers found that they could make money, by buying "locked" adapters for a significant discount, and then hacking into them and selling them to unsuspecting customers as "unlocked" adapters)...

BTW: If you really want to try playing with your adapter to see if you can "fix" your problems (that seem like they are probably caused as part of the way it was "unlocked"), I suggest you go over to the DSLreports VoIP forum, and search for threads on unlocking adapters. I think you will find more info on the subject than you ever wanted to know. Just be prepared to waste a lot of time in the effort, as the procedures can be a PITA (and really do resemble "hacking" techniques, only in this case the people are trying to break into equipment they technically already own)...

Hello,

I bought the same Router and it was sold as Unlocked, its working with my provider Acanac.ca so I think it is Unlocked. I'm trying to make changes in the http://192.168.15.1/Voice_adminPage.htm page, I need to update Dial Plan field to access my Voice Mail by dialing "*123" I can make changes but when I hit Save it brings up the Mssg. The Requested Page not found".

What is the problem here? If I just go to the http://192.168.15.1 it will ask for ID and Psswd but if go to http://192.168.15.1/Voice_adminPage.htm it doesn't ask for ID/Psswd. I'm thinking its taking me as a visitor and not as Admin therefore it doesn't let me save any changes. I tried logging in http://192.168.15.1 with or without ID (Admin) and just Psswd but still same result.

Please help... send me an e-mail, so I can send screen shots if needed.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but does someone know how to make line 2 work on this device?

Thanks!

I assume the Viatalk password called for in the re-setting router instructions above is not the same as the web access password??

A VT tech told me that this ATA can not be used behind another router. Does anyone know if that's true?

It works fine for outbound, but not for inbound because the device is not able to register with VT from what he said.

Any experiences to the contrary?

Thanks.

Hello, I was able to setup the device according to instructions around the forum but my problem is that I could not receive incoming calls. As soon as It ring, hit the voice mail. Any suggestions? Thanks
