When I signed up for Viatalk, one of the features that I loved was the ability to record a call by simply dialing *1. There were many times when I was on the phone with a representative of some company trying to find out what happened to my order or getting technical support when I realized that I needed a record of what they were saying.

One day I dialed *1 and went back later to get the recording and there was none. I continued trying to record calls and it didn't seem to work anymore, so I contacted support and was told that the feature was removed and they were in the process of reworking it to be better.

I waited patiently believing that my beloved call recording feature would return better than ever, however now I've found out that now we have to dial *99 BEFORE placing the call. What about recording incoming calls? How am I supposed to know that I need to record a conversation beforehand?

I absolutely love Viatalk, however I feel like my wall of devotion to the product has lost a few bricks. Why was this wonderful feature removed in the first place? Why the new restrictions on recording calls?

I would like to use it also if they should bring it back. Let's see their suggestions. Fingers crossed :)

When I first heard of the Record-A-Call feature I thought Great! for the same reasons. But after reading the way it works now it makes it hard to use because you have to "anticipate" the need. That makes it severely incompatible with the nature of a call. I don't know when I'm going to need it and how many times I wish I could just hit a button and record like we could in the "old days" with stand-alone answering machines.

This came in really handy when I got a call from the IRS and the agent started yelling at me, I hit the record button, which in this case would be *1 (if it were still a feature), after the fact. Afterwards, when I was not so startled, I listened to the recording and they had the wrong person. I played it for my local IRS agency and they said they would take care of it. I got a call a week later and was apologized to and told that the agent was no longer affiliated. Woo Hooo!

SO . . . having, *1, makes it a very valuable feature. The way it is set up now I don't how it has any value.

Do you guys think if we request it through a ticket that VT can program it on our line? Since they don't have it system wide what if we requested it for our line only? Then whoever else wants the feature would call in to get it added to their line.

That's an excellent question. Is there anyone we can ask on the forums or through email? My concern would be that it might be a craps shoot whether the support tech who answers your ticket is knowledgeable in that area and/or willing to look into it. If we got word that this was possible from someone in the know then at least we'd have somewhere to start with support.

The Call Record feature had to be re-written as it previously caused other issues. Currently the *99 prefix is the only way to record a call on our network. The *1 feature is not in development at this time.

hrtanya,

That's a shame, as it is very limited in its current state. Not many calls where I definitely know that I am going to need to record a call from the beginning. I am usually already on a call when I may feel the need to begin recording a conversation. :(

This is a case that I think VT should really listen to what the customers are asking for if they want to promote that they have a good call recording feature. It's only a partially completed feature, IMO. I have seen countless requests to expand the functionality of this feature in the DSLREPORTS forum.

Well, I have tried *99 a couple times since I read about the change and haven't received any recorded calls in my voicemail, so I wonder if it even works.

I dialed *99, waited for another dial tone, then dialed the number. *shrug*

Don't wait for a dial tone after marking *99. When you dial *99 next time enter the number immediately following *99. You don't have to wait for a dial tone. I have tried it with an 11 digit and 7 digit number and they both work even though on VT's website they say to enter an 11 digit number. Let me know if it works.

I too am disappointed I thought that recording the call was a part of Viatalk's advantage. Setup Viatalk for first time this afternoon, here *99 does not work at all.

Make sure you are dialing the *99 without waiting for a dialtone. If you type in *99+11 digit phone number all in a row, it should work.

There is a recommendation in the main feature request list to provide a true on-the-fly recording solution that can be started, stoped, and restarted at any point in the call. Please stop by to vote your interest in this feature. The link to the feature request list is here:

http://forums.hostrocket.com/showthread.php?t=21041

Within there you will see a link to the voting site. Does not require a login...and you can change your vote at anytime (does not allow repeat votes, but does allow changes to your vote).

Come on VT please listen to us. Bring back this feature. Even if it has to be a different format since *1 conflicts with other settings. Anything will do that is comparable and short to the prior setup. But please bring this back.:(

I signed up on 7/18 and am still waiting for service. One of the features that encouraged me to sign up for ViaTalk over the competition (who would have had me running the same day I signed up) was the record feature.

What I think I'm hearing is that I can only record calls that I make when I do *99 before dialing? So, if I call ViaTalk and want to record my call, I'll have a 3 hour music on hold message before I talk to anyone?

I'm getting close to canceling my order and going with someone else....

I think it's limited to 30 minuets. So you'd have 30 mins of hold music then nothing.

I would love in-call recording too. It would be great for those times someone is speaking fast and technical where you could go back and listen. I'm really bad at taking notes in real-time too so this would take the pressure off. Does anyone have the *99 record working? I've tried it, but it doesn't seem to put any recording in my voicemail. One time it put recordings in there 15 days later.
