I love the service, but the only thing that is truly missing is other Codec support. At this point many of us use our broadband for a lot of other things. There are times that we are watching movies from Movielinks, and with the larger Codec the audio becomes horrible. The ability to use the G.729 codec, and allow users to go into their account and change their preference would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

*01729 Sets your PAP2 to prefer G729 - *02729 forces your adapter to use G729.

However, ViaTalk does not support G729, only G711. I believe this is what the OP is referring to.

Ahhh, I see. Yes that could be a problem...

For similar reasons as stated above, I'd really like G279 support as an option. It would be helpful when bandwidth is a crunch, and to be able to turn it on and off, using the number sequence mentioned above would be great.

I'd like to see G.729 codec support also -- maybe Viatalk doesn't want to pay the license fee?

I think the problem would be, from a ViaTalk perspective, a significant DSP cost to provide support for G.729. G.711 (and I'll talk a little bit from the Cisco VOIP perspective) is a one-for-one DSP channel call. For example, the Texas Instruments chip, PVDM2-32 is a 2 DSP/32 channel processor. That chip can handle 32 G.711 calls, but only about 12 G.729 calls due to the overhead of voice compression. The list price for a single DSP/16 channel processor from Cisco, is about $750.

I would pay the license fee to use it.
