View Full Version : Allow users to listen to the various ring cadences in control panel

Hello,

In the distinctive ring section of the control panel, it would be nice if users could listen to cadence (timing) of the various ring patterns (Bellcore-r1, Bellcore-r2, etc). In wav or mp3 format, but .wav is the better choice.

Thank you for listening.

Actually .mp3 is the better choice as its better sound quality... But .wav downloads faster.

Well, since it's just a ringer cadence, quality isn't too important :) Normally I'd recommend mp3's as well for it's lossy compression (5mb sure beats 50mb of a regular .wav). As far as quality goes, they both support high sampling frequencies and bit depth. MP3 just makes it take a lot less space on disk :)

I only suggested .wav as a better choice since most browsers/computers support it natively. Some OS's/browsers require third-party software to be downloaded and installed before it can play MP3's. Granted, that is necessary less and less as more software is installed by default on new computers, it still may present a difficulty for the older computers running older software.

I thought I should offer up my reasoning for recommending .wav over .mp3 for this particular situation. :)

I would love to have had that when setting up my tones.

And more of them would be great. Some of them are kinda unusable, unless you want your phone sounding like R2D2.

+1 -- is there any voting system for this?

I too would like this option. doesn't seem a difficult request to fill. ;)

...especially since Sunrocket allowed us to listen to them....

I agree. I'd like to hear them. The current system of set it up, call yourself, listen to the ring is awkward and silly.

Boy, this is an old thread that was dug up. I also had the same frustration while attempting to set up the ring tones. I guess that no one from VT actually looks that this thread as none of them have made any comments as to the feasibility of this idea.

I agree, mp3 samples would be nice to test the distinctive rings. Alternatively, it could instead if it could actually ring your phone with that distinctive ring so you can see how your phone handles it... that would be nice too.

.mp3 is not a better sound quality than .wav, nor would .wav be a faster download. An .mp3 file is basically a compressed .wav file. .wav is a raw, uncompressed audio file. Take a .wav and compress it, and you wind up with a .mp3 (some loss, much smaller file)

A debate on the quality of the file is meritless - we're talking about telephone "rings", not musical ring tones...
Never the less, this would be an excellent feature, especially to be able to set a ring specific to your Virtual Number(s) -- so when one of your virtual numbers was called it would ring different from the main/standard ring.

Or could someone who has already listened to them just post them in some sort of text format?

I am picturing:
-------000000-------
as a standard tone

and -0-0--000-----0-0--000-----As being something like #1.

I can't even do the set and call yourself trick, becaue I don't have another phone available. I just want a "normal" sounding ring cadence.

Belcore 1 should be the standard ring.

Belcore 1 should be the standard ring.

Am I trying to set it in the wrong place? I am using the Linksys PAP2. On the "USER 1" pref pane, at the bottom, There is a ring settings group. Under "Default Ring" I have a pulldown set at "1" and it is a goofy cadenced ring - always makes me think the person hung up.

I agree...one great feature is to add the ability to hear what the sounds are when a person "rings-in."

Add me to the list of people who want this feature.

It's interesting to note that this thread is now 2-1/2 years old.

If I could find the appropriate sound files, I could throw up a web page allowing people to hear the various rings in about 5 minutes!
