I just received my Linksys PAP2-NA phone adapter today and installed my service. I'm pleased with it but I did experience a couple of problems. The Customer Support service did work well with me on these issues but ultimately researching the issues on the web myself proved most beneficial.
I'm posting the problems and solutions I discovered below should anyone else ecounter them.
1. Humm in the phone line.
This sounded like a bad phone line, the humm was aggrevating.
Then I came across the following Vonage forum thread.. http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic4727.html
Yes, it's Vonage, but the problem isn't dependant on the service, it's with the Linksys PAP2-AN phone adapter. Apparently the PAP2 isn't well grounded and if there is any interference, A/C Humm, RFI, etc. coming into it over the ethernet line or power line then you may get it into your phone. Following a link form that thread, I tried the phone cord in Port 2 trick but linking the wires together did nothing for me. Since I knew it was a grounding issue, I grounded the leads to a grounding screw on the back of my computer case, since the adapter is on top of the computer anyays. The noise instantly dissappeared. This may work for others out there if you should experience this nuisance.
2. DTMF Dial Tones failed to be recognized during calls.
If I dialed my Voicemail or some other phone menu sys, i.e. automated bank account line for example, the keypad seemed to be ignored during calls.
After much searching and digging, I changed the DTMF setting in the PAP2 configuration screens from the "AUTO" format to "INBAND". I was later told by a ViaTalk representative that this setting change is sometimes required for people experiencing this problem. :)
