Im seriously considering Voip. Ive been a hostrocket hosting customer in the past and have always been satisfied with thier services. Tons of features for a few bucks a month.
Anyway, i dont understand how phone numbers work with VOIP. Are you issued a phone number? With a local area code? How does that work? I know nothing at all about phone networks, but how does one call a number without it going through a phone company, and if it does goes through a phone company, how does it cost nothing?
VoIP works just like a regular phone. You get a local number (if one is available in your area, you can check on ViaTalks website). People can still call you, and you can still call out. You also get all the extra features that most phone companies charge for free. And yes, it still does go through a phone company, just not on your end, but on ViaTalks end.

Ah, i understand that now. Thanks a lot.
Maybe i should find a VOIP tech forum, but for now ill lay this question here:
So basically the switching is done by a phone company. Like if i contacted someone else on viatalks network, it would go only to viatalk and the internet correct?
If i were to call someone regular analog home phone, my message would go to viatalk through the internet, and then to a phone company, and through their lines?
If someone were calling me from an analog phone, it would go to the phone company and through their lines to viatalk, and through the internet to me?
Is this the basic idea

Right. Once the service is setup, you will generally not notice a difference when it comes to day-to-day use. You can use your existing telephones, phone jacks, etc. if you want.
