Hi All,
I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone interested in the HR dedicated servers. I'm posting this message because I'm a satisfied customer and thought that I could help anyone out if they have any questions.
I started with HR around August 2003 with a shared account. I later added a second site also on a shared account. Luckily for me, my second site took off and I upgraded it to a semi-dedicated server. The HR team moved my site seamlessly for me and I had minimal downtime.
I planned to launch several new sites, so I decided that a dedicated server was the way to go for me to minimize my monthly hosting fees. In January I signed up for the P4, 1024MB RAM, 80Gig HD dedicated server with the Cpanel add-on. The HR team setup the server for me, and moved my two existing accounts to the same box. The dedicated server was running it's own DNS server, so I was able to add another 80 something sites to the server. Life was good....
After an initial couple months, I had traffic spikes that were outgrowing the capacity of that dedicated server, so I recently split my sites between 2 of the dual xeon dedicated servers. Once again the HR team setup the servers and moved my accounts from my previous dedicated to the new servers. When I say moved my accounts, I mean all my files, the databases, the DNS records, etc.. I had a few minor details that needed to be worked out and my calls to the dedicated support line were always answered quickly and efficiently. I was really impressed with the support I was receiving.
After the initial dedicated server setup, these are the things I like best:
1. The Cpanel add-on is worth it. It make site maintence, setup, statistics, etc a peice of cake. There are some options (like automated site backups), that haven't even explored yet.
2. I like the SSH access so that I can get to the command prompt. I import my databases via the command since that is what I'm comfortable with. I also like to SSH in at peak times to run commands to check the CPU and process utilization. I also have some custom scripts that I wrote and placed is /usr/local/bin to help me administer my sites.
3. I like the dedicated server so that I can tweak the mysql databases. On the shared accounts you really get the default mysql settings (which are good), but I needed a few site specific tweaks.
4. Since I'm running my own DNS server, I can easily add new sites to my server via the Cpanel Webhost manager. I started as a newbie, but the HR support team walked me through a site setup and it turned out to be really easy. I now use it all the time at my own leisure.
Last but not least, I'd like to give a thanks to Ian, Dave, and Robin. Each of them have answered my support calls at various times of the day. Nights and weekends too. Sometimes I'd call thinking that my newbness would show, but these people gave me top notch support. Not only would they fix any issues that I had, they would also show me how to do things so that I could do some basic trouble shooting on my own if I ever needed to.
If anyone has any questions about my experiences with HR, feel free to respond.
Thanks,
Grant
