And I don't know what that will entail.
Anyone here have a dedicated server? What kind of skills am sorely lacking in? Should I pay the extra for CP? Are any of the free control panel programs any good???
Discuss!

If you can pick up some basic sys admin skills, then it seems like a waste for the extra 40 or 50 they charge for the CP.

That's a big "if." LOL
But, yeah, I'm going to try -- it's a lot of money.
I would try looking into the free CP first, and see if there are any good ones out there.

I found two that seem promising -- I won't be able to tell until I install them, but I'm hopeful!

I have 1 dedicated server here with HR and 11 with another company that I'm so desperate to leave.
First, I'm a reseller hosting provider. I resell web hosting both shared and dedicated. I use the same billing software that HR uses (ModernBill). Modernbill has to talk and play nice with the cp software flavors that exist today. The three main CP software packages out there are Plesk, cPanel, and Ensim. All three suck. Why? well they're a waste of server resources, they completely take over your server and leave you pretty much optionless.
Take my advice: If you wanna go dedicated, leave it as a shell server and install software on your own... unless until I get Nucleus ready for production :-D
P.S. Nucleus is my latest software project. It's a CP that has all the features of Webmin and Plesk without the "hostile takeover" aspect. If you want a free CP that will do the things you dont know how to do in the shell, i suggest Webmin for now.

Also, HR uses CentOS for their base OS. Its a good OS by all means. Its really nothing more than a RedHat rip. BUT the only thing is that Plesk and Ensim dont seem to want to install on it really well.
Thus, I have my own RHN subscription and I had the techies install RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 AS on my server. There is a fee for that though.

When you install most of these cp's, keep in mind that to remove it, you'll have to totally reimage your drives and start out clean. CP software does NOT install itself only, it totally takes over your whole server, removing RPM's, installing SOURCE builds over RPM's and making a mess out of everything... just so you know :(

It was too late for me, as I already set the server up a few weeks ago and I *do* have CP now. But I'm fine with that -- I tried with just shell access and was completely lost, so I have a lot to learn before I do that. :-)
A year ago, I couldn't have done it even with CPanel, so as time goes on, I'm sure I'll get to that point.
