modem - no dialtone

I have a new presario sr1365cl with agere modem. It gives no dialtone unless I play with the cable at the back of the pc? Anyone know anything about this. I have exchanged the pc with the dealer 3 times--same problem. I spent hours on the phone with compaq running tests.

Have you tried moving it to different outlets? Or even trying it at another house?

Have you tried plugging a phone in and using it?

Yeah, I would go with trying a phone first in the jack. Did you try different cables? I imagine that one of the support guys may have suggested that too.

Thanks for the responses. My old pc works fine with the same cable and phone connection. The new one works if I take the cable out and put it back in while it is trying to dial. There are discussions of this problem with this modem brand (Agere) on the internet. One guy fixed the problem by taking his phone off the hook in another room.
