Displaying XML using Javascript

I'm having issues doing a project for class. The assignment is to display all the information from an XML document in an HTML environment using Javascript. The problem lies in the fact that javascript wasn't designed to do this. I realize that XSLT would do this alot better, but such is the assingment. Is there an easy way to do this?

bear in mind that I"ve never played with javascript before this, the professor can't seem to understand that fact.
