Ok, so I have a problem. I want to set up a wireless network between my computer upstairs, which is not internet connected, and my downstairs computer, which is internet connected. The only problem is, I live in a house on an Air Force base that was built in the 1930s, and has lead based paint on the walla, ceilings, etc. Will the lead kill my signal before it gets to the second floor, or should I go ahead and buy the stuff?

Does lead paint stop that stuff? And even if it does, is it thick enough to stop it? If it is, it can still travel via the hall and stairs and stuff.
Go for it, but save the receipt just in case.
Can you use a 2.4 Ghz phone upstairs? If so, then wireless would be no problem.
I suggest buying a Linksys system, and they seem to be better in distance (they have 2 antennas on the base for that reason). You can also buy bigger antennas for Linksys systems for maxium performace.

About the phone ,I think you maybe right. And its a 800 MHz phone at that. Thanks for the advice.

The paint shouldn't be a problem. The construction materials used in the ceilings etc. could, though. If this was an institutional-type building, they may have used cement between floors, or some other material that tends to block signals. Different routers of the same brand have different signal strengths, and some routers will work under conditions others won't. Since it is only one floor (presumably), you probably will be ok. I am just pointing out that there is no blanket answer to your basic question, "Will the wireless router I buy work in my situation." You will only know by trying. You should be careful about where in the rooms you site both the router and the receiving computer. Good luck.

Zach: worst case just eat the paint chips until you get a signal. ;)
I've had decent luck with my linksys wrt54g, but make sure you can take it back just incase. (note: the 54g isn't the "speedbooster" model, but that's BS overbleed anyway) I have the access point in one room of the house and sometimes have a hard time getting a signal in other rooms.. This is just basic 1997 construction - no lead paint..

Call the air force and tell them to get rid of the lead paint.
You figure that it would be against code.

Only on new construction.

Did you get a router? If so, which one? And did you have any problems?
