Hi,

I have a Win XP 1.1hertz 512 ram with 40 gig hardrive. A few days ago I installed an additional 80 gig Maxtor drive, & everything had been working perfectly for a few days, but today I opened explorer to navagate to some files & it didnt display my D, E, & F dirve (CD burner, DVD burner, 80 ghig hardrive), yet it magically displays another drive labeled: DVD drive G:
The drives havent disappeared or stopped functioning, I can navaigate to them but i have to manually type in thier address in the explorer address bar.

IE: F:\Bobs files

If I open a program like MS Word, & try to open a file it wont list & let me access the D, E, F: drives. I dodnt know if this has anything to do with it, but I noticed when I installed the hardrive that my originall drive was a fat32 drive & the new one was an NTFS drive. Does anyone know what has happened or how I can fix this? Im a rookie at this stuff so anyone needs any info I listed my registry with a software called hijack this below:

I had this happen to a friend of mine. Apprently, when he installed his new drive, it was listed as a master - But, it booted the other drive since it had the MBR on it.

Oddly enough, when this happened, he had weird and yet undefined results. Sometimes his second drive would be listed as H:, or it could be listed as something like Y:. I do believe this might be a bug in windows XP.

What you may want to check is your jumper settings on the second drive it's self and perhaps the main drive -- Make sure the main drive is set as master and the secondary drive as slave. Also make sure you have the two drives on the same IDE channel (Using the same IDE ribbon.) - If you have a drive and cd drive on one ribbon and the same on the other, it'll mess up the order of drives.

As for fat32 and ntfs mixing..Windows 2000 has no problems with that so I cannot, personally say that is the problem. From your HT log, it looks like your system is fairly clean (except for the mass of anti-virus/spyware scanners) so I would rule that out at the moment.

Try those and report back, we'll go from there.

Not a problem. I just basically gave you a run through of what I would check if I were working on that computer at the time.

But yea, let us know if that fixes it.

sounds to me very much like a jumper problem as well. I havent had anything like that happen specifically, but there are always weird problems when the hardware doesnt quite match up to the software.

if your drive has an option for "Cable select" on the jumpers, use that instead of setting it to default slave: the rest of the drives, especially on a pre-made machine will all be set to "cable select" so that the OS can sort them out as it sees fit.
