i'll omit the story, because i dont have alot of time here, but i broke my windows, and i need to find a way to fix it.
a necessary startup file, "c_1252.nls" has been accidentally renamed, and windows will not boot without it. I need to gain write access to drive C (/dev/hda1 for linux types) from either a bootable floppy or CD-ROM image, so that i can rename the file appropriately.
I've tried several options already, none of which work. I've tried a simple linux distro (CORE linux), but it would only let me mount the drive as "read only" because of the NTFS file system. I tried making a winXP bootdisk, but it doesnt work, I tried making a win98 emergency disk, but it wont allow me to access the C drive ( i assume that win98 kernel can't read/write to ntfs). I tried freedos, but it wont let me access the drive till i format and "sys" it.
I do not have the WinXP setup CD, my computer came with a "system recovery" CD from the OEM. as such, my CD only has utilities to reformat the drive, not to recover the OS.
like i said, i only need write access to drive C for less then a minute to rename one file. anybody have any suggestions?
