Patchy reponse times?

This is the first time I am using an Apache server with Linux. Up to now I have used dare I say it Microplop Windows IIS.

I've seen that sometimes the images refresh and other times they do not.

There are no meta tags or preload commands in the HTML - and there is no Javascript.

The reponse time is therefore patchy - sometimes I get almost instant load and other times a 5-6 second delay reloading what should be already cached images.

the phpBB module also shows the same behavior so I don't think itis my coding.

Am I missing something here?

I have looked at it in Opera 6, Netscape 7 and IE 6 - makes no difference.

Don't think I can post an url here but basically the site is

I am looking at the site from Spain via the Telefonica network that has a server side cache as well - but I don0t have the patchy response times with other US based servers????

Do you have the stats of the machine it is running on? Memory, processor, version of apache, etc. Number of hits? Knowing especially the amount of memory might be the tell-tale. But there are other issues, and some network issues, that can cause varying response from the server.
