was building a bootable cd on windows about a week ago and downloaded some tools good to have on it... well i got format in the form of a file called FORMAT.EXE and thought nothing of it until i tried to remove a dir and the file in question was further down the structure in this dir that i removing... first thing it does is complain about being used at the moment and that i can't remove it, i manage to locate the source of the problem to the file FORMAT.EXE.

now this is where things get weird belive it or not ;-)
it turns out i cannot remove this file no matter what i do, windows constantly thinks it's using it somehow, i can copy the file but the copy cannot be removed either... it seems like as soon as windows sees this file it starts using it.

has anyone had this problem because i really want to get rid of this stupid file!

If you bring up the Task Manager and the Processes tab, do you see it in there? If so, then just kill it. Otherwise, try rebooting into a safe mode and then delete it.

Just so you know, format.exe is the program used by Windows to actually format disks. I'm not sure you actually want to delete it.

i already tried all of that or else i wouldn't post here... i rarely post on forums for help.

yes i know what it's used for but this is a file i downloaded from a site claiming to host format.exe or at least a version of it but i have no problems with the format.exe that comes with win.

i've also checked the registry for this new format.exe and all i could find are mru listings which are useless
