Is it right to use only one vendors' software and gain expertise?

Depends on your definition of 'right'.

You can do it that way, but in the long run, you're only hurting yourself. It's a rule of thumb in the computing community (especially coding) to familurize yourself with just about anything you can.

Hardcore Microsoft people will want to stick with Windows, but what happens when you learn all there is to the OS? Move on to Linux. Familurize yourself with it and become adept with it. It's all about raising your bar of knowledge further than what it currently is.

Don't get me wrong - becoming an expert in one particular software is a great idea! You'll go long ways when it's needed. But what happens when you're needed in another field? What about it's competetitor? Of course you'll want to know it. It's also great to put on a resume; especially when you have many flavours of that one particular type of software (OS's, for instance).

Hope this helps.

I've been an MS faithful for a long time now, but i still know (and am learning every day) alot about linux.

also, i'm finally starting work on my own OS, so i'm getting all the fundamentals too.

it's good to stay on top of everything.

Starting your own OS from scratch, Whiteknight?

If you are then not only do I have alot of respect for you, but I also feel for you. Pain in the ass if you ask me.

Maybe by the time you have a working project i'll be done with my SMM (secure memory module) and i'll let you put it in your project. Good luck man.
