I am trying to find a php users group in the Houston area. If any one knows of such a thing it would be a great help.

Yeah actually I have. I found a couple that may prove to be helpful. They’re once a month meetings so basically I was trying to find all that I could. It’s kind of amazing really. You’d think in a city of 4.5 million there would be more than 2 groups meeting once a month.

That's what the internet's for.....

You can get together with other coders and ask questions whenever you want from the comfort of your own leather recliner....

or lawn chair if times are tough...

The internet is very useful but it doesn’t work for all things.

That is the route I first took. In fact I have been trying to work this out for probably close to a year. It seems the problem is that unless the particular issue can be dealt with in 2 or 3 posts the chain of communication breaks down and never gets solved. Here is the specific problem;

I am trying to get a flash form to send and get data from a database using a PHP script that resides in the www folder on an 2000 windows machine (advanced server) I have Apache set up and running and I have PHP set up and working, and I have MySQL set up and running. I can query the database from a command prompt and I can pull up phpinfo.php from the browser so it appears everything is running. However when I take for instance a php script from a book, change the appropriate file and directory paths and run it the action fails. I have tried this scenario more times than I can count with more configurations than I can remember. I have tried it with MySQL, I have tried it with MSSQL using ASP and PHP and putting the database on a remote server where I have a webpage. To make this even more difficult I keep having this annoying thing called my life that keeps taking me away from the task of working this out and so I keep having to set it aside for weeks or months at a time. So here I find myself a year later having still not worked this out. I know it can’t be that big of a trick. For instance it can’t be near as involved as setting up a Domain Controller with DNS running Active Directory. Granted, designing an extensive database can get involved but that’s not what we’re talking about. All I’m trying to do is write and read one record. In other words I just need to get one working model that I can use to expand from.

At present I am using a setup that I found recommended on another message board. It’s called “FoxServ” and is a three part package of Apache, MySQL, and PHP specifically setup for Windows.

In any event the problem seems to be obscure enough that nailing it down through message boards just isn’t practical, and so I find myself in search of users groups.

If there is a living person who knows this stuff then I can put this on the laptop and I can sit down at the local Starbucks and go through this with some one who can point out where I’m going wrong and explain what and where things are.

Can you post code? Granted, leave out the password and oh you know already so why am I asking? Also, which flash version are you using?

Actually, I had sort of the same problem while working with databases and the like. Tried using examples but they didn't work and finally this guy helped me out on ICQ. Been working with Databases a long time since.

ronc: what part of Houston are you in? I'm no PHP expert, but I do live in the area (League City) and wouldn't mind sitting down and hacking out some code with you.
