talking to HID interface...using C# and API

Can anybody point me in the right direction please. I am trying to write a little program that will monitor a mag-card reader that is connected to my machine as a HID device. I would just like catch any data that is sent in threw it.

Also, is it necessay to purchase the Microsoft DDK?
