Considering HostRocket - Subdomain Question

I'm looking for a host and HostRocket is at the top of the list. But I have a question about subdomains. I've seen differing explanations on other host sites. My question is do the subdomains on HostRocket use their own

http://www.subdomain.com, or
http://www.xyz.com/~subdomain,
or other?

Also are the subdomains seperate registered domain names? Thanks -

subdomains are like:

http://subdomain.yourdomain.com

for instance, I have:

http://www.johnmiller2004.com

and one subdomain I have is:

http://beta.johnmiller2004.com

Thanks - Thats what I thought, and that'll work because I just want to give some free space to a couple of people/groups and didnt want to pay for a domain name.
