View Full Version : home network naming convention...

since getting a job (and therefore, broadband :)) seems pretty much imminent at this point given the number of prospects within my reach, i've come to a bit of a dilemma...
my network will consist of 4 machines total. i have an OLD pI that i'll be using as a router/gateway, a pII 233 that will probably be for mail/web crap (and running my bot), my main machine which will stay in that role, and another machine that i was given by my wife's cousin who upgraded (unsure of this one's use atm, probably mp3/general storage).
so, i know several of you have networks in-house and have special naming conventions for the machines...
i'm having trouble coming up with a cool one. any suggestions?
shanks :)

I use Sealab 2021 characters. Posting this from quinn, working on setting up stormy as my main server box. Debbie is sitting idly by. The hundley (laptop) is next to me as well, and I need to set up murphy.
"Is there any specific reason to use a naming convention? Why not just, say, don on a blindfold, pirouette, toss a spoon, and name it after whatever you hit?" Well, naming conventions are used, by convention. :)
Personally, I only have one computer: funkstation

Muppets! Gonzo, Kermit the frog etc.
I don't actually use this naming convention, but it is an idea.
Current setup:
zenfoo - main workstation
blackbox - old laptop
I think I would go with a troll thing if I had a few boxen.. pallu, evilone (yeah, he gets double mention), xilica, etc...

Personally, I ponder the inner qualities of each machine for a while. After a great deal of meditation, I choose the most fitting name in the universe.
Using this same train of thought I named my main computer at home "Dora" after the computer in several Robert Heinlein novels.
My PII is named "Tux" 'cause it was my first Linux box.
My router/firewall is named "HeyYou".
And I just call my wife's iMac "Mac.
I use to have a server in my house that ran demo software for a company I use to be with. It was in a slick black case with no monitor, mouse or keyboard hooked up so we named it "Monolith" after the black monolith in the movie "2001".
I don't even have a name for my work computer. The network calls it WK7897N27 but I think I'll start referring to it as "Sally"

Since you're a Pythonista, why not Monty Python sketches/movies/scenes?
deadparrot, spam, knightsOfNi, lumberjack, etc?
or maybe actors?
Idle, Chapman, Cleese, Gilliam, Palin, ...

I don't know why you posted this thread, we all know you're going to name them after the members of n'sync. btw, I'm working on Timberlake right now. ;)

My laptop is Tychagara, my desktop which used to be my gateway is Nexus, my server is Ibiza, an e-machine I got from a crappy job is Stolen, I dubbed my sis's desktop is Plzkilme, and my older machines are Nostalgia, Oldschool, Pieceofcrap, and Goddamnsnail, respectively.
.. I have a short attention span.
Hey nex, since your avatar happens to be Crono from Chrono Trigger, I thought I should tell you that I named my 3 comps after the 3 magis in the game: balthasar (my desktop), gaspar (my server) and melchior (my bros' comp -- i.e., my old computer).
On a sidenote, I bought Chrono Trigger/Final Fantasy 4 on the Playstation today ;)

I used animal names on my network at home: platypus, walrus, and monkey (I only have my main box up here in Berkeley though so no network here). But when I set it all back up I'm going to use names of mathematicians :D
Main box = Galois
Then my server and laptop will have names chosen from Gauss, Euler, and Godel :) And the one left over will be given to my gf's imac :D

Yes Strike I know...this thread has been repeated on lno before and I've responded accordingly and you keep bringing it up.
It also appears in Evangelion for those who watch Anime.

Well since inkedmn is taking soo much heat I'm going to try to distribute the load.
I saw The Holy Grail and wasn't in tears laughing. I guess it was fine for old British comedy but whatever.
name mine after my favorite movies.....matrix....alien.....matrix2(when it comes out!).......

I named both my boxes after Converge songs.
"Concubine" - Windows XP laptop
"Downpour" - Slackbox
and I'm probably gonna rename my roommates computer when we get dsl.

NICE :)
i've been leaning toward moulin rouge characters, btw :)
at this point:
router/gateway - Toulouse
web/mail - TheDuke
main - Christian
spare - Zidler
NarcolepticArgentinean would be cool if it weren't so freakin' long...
/me prepares for barrage of "fagmo"- and "wuss"-type comments (most of which will be oozing with masculine insecurity) :)

Hey! Here's an idea! You should name them after US! don't you think "Bradmont" would be an awesome name for a workstation?
:D

I'm surprised you don't name them joana1, joana2 and joana3.

I tend to use interesting names/words from books I've read.
Desktop = Pontifex (means bridge-builder in Latin but I got it from the book Cryptonomicon)
New SGI O2 = Kelsenellenelvial
Gateway/Server = Sexamuttoid (combination of eveyone's primary screenname in my apartment)

or how about GISH
:P
Grizzly

I used - you guessed it....bears!
Grizzly is my main workstation, Kodiak is my main web/app/file server, and Polar is my laptop. Any future computers will most likely go with names like Asiatic, Syrian, Sloth, Maylay, Panda, etc.
At work we use names of Italian cities. When you have 20+ systems in a room you usually end up going w/ cities from some country, because damn...you run out of names quick otherwise!

Other naming schemes I've seen:
Units of measurement (mostly EE stuff) for the engineering Sun workstations: watt, joule, coulomb, newton, tesla, ampere, etc.
Snow white and the seven dwarves for an 8-node Beowulf cluster at school.
