MySQL server problems

I'm running apache on my computer. I've got it working good, even got PHP working. But everytime I try to run mysqld.exe --standalone it slows the machine down sooo much. Everything gets really laggy and even when I try to install phpBB it won't connect. (Timeout)

Anyone have some idea's of what may be going on I would appreaciate it.

I had this prob as well, turned out that it was a bad configuration file...myini..or whatever they call it...I had to set it to handle the correct file size and what not....look there first

well yes it was my my.ini file is guess. except now when i try to install phpBB it says it cant connect to database..do i have to create the database first?
