Okay, this probably is so small that I don't really need any help with it, but I figured I'd post a thread about it to get some feedback from the community, and see if anyone had any input they would like to give.

Basically, you know how X-Chat (and other irc clients, I'm sure) highlights a channel's tab with a different color when someone addresses a post directly to you? I think it'd be really nifty if the gnome panel had some kind of indicator that let you know when this (or possibly other things) occured. that way you'd know someone was addressing you when you were on a different virtual window, or had XChat minimized or something.

I'm currently reading up on programming for gnome:
http://developer.gnome.org/doc/GGAD/cha-glib.html

and I need to investigate the X-Chat srouce situation.

But this seems like a relatively small project.

Just wondering what people thought; and if anyone happens to interested enough in it, I wouldn't refuse help. Also, I might need people egg me on, since it's possible (read: likely) that I'll get halfway through it and just forget about it or something.

well, it would really depend on what irc client you were using.. :) What IRC client do you use? Is it open source? Does it support scripting?

X-Chat

Oh, xchat is available in windows?

Hm. well, I do know how to add little things to the "system tray" (Actually that's not what it is, but everyone calls it that) on the taskbar, so I could do that probably... :)

no...never had to but I do not think it would be that hard....to bad I do not know to much about IRC and the app clients to tackle this...?? on the other hand here is a little project for me as well!! :) I think I will tackle it in C?

I'd say C++

Do you have a copy of visual studio? I can show you a project that will help you out on the "taskbar" side of things. Then it's just a matter of looking into the XChat code, which should hopefully not be too hard.

okay. lemme find it...

well, since you said you want to do a c# project:

http://codeproject.com/csharp/trayiconmenu01.asp

there's how to use the system tray with c#

I know there's an article dealing with the system tray in C++, because I've used it. If you still want that, let me know. It's probably a little different.

Btw, if you plan on doing coding in windows, you'll want to remember that site. Very, very handy.

Are you still working on that project kmj? I think that would be really useful, so if you've finished it, could you please give a link to the source? I have that problem all the time, when I'm browsing or playing a gaming or whatever someone talks to me, and I only notice it after half an hour :/

Gnome is GTK.... GTK is based on C, no?

GTK+ is a graphical toolkit for C, but it is possible to use it with other languages. For example, pygtk provides GTK for python, and gtkmm provides it for C++. In general, C is used to make GTK programs.
