Often it is like this v2.3.4
2 = a major change from version 1
3 = a minor update
4 = a bug fix

jumping from 6.0 tp 6.5, .1 - .4 may have been only released internally for testing.

I don't believe I have seen any recent "in-betweens" on releases to the public as far as IE goes. usually IE 5.5, 6.0, 5.0, etc etc.

What about MozExplorer or Opera Explorer?

I read an article awhile ago about having multiple browsers all with the same rendering engine (gecko) and different interfaces to suit individual needs. This can already be seen, in Mozilla, Galeon, Skipstone, etc. I would really like to see this happen, especially since it would provide a proper standard that's actually adhered to (/me glances menacingly at IE).

That would be neat-o...there are also some more, for Windows. I have tried them, only heard of them.

Beonex Communicator - http://www.beonex.com/communicator/
and K-Meleon - http://www.kmeleon.org/

oh, and Chimera for Mac OSX - http://chimera.mozdev.org/index.html

The only problem with that is that different renderers serve different purposes. Some want to be fast as hell and not be so flashy with plugin support (like Opera), some want to be fully standards compliant and support tons of locales (like Moz) and some of them are for other things (like, text only for example, eg lynx and w3m).

i just want to see a browser that is fully CSS2.0 compatable. to my knowledge, only Opera is at this point, although i'll be damned if i'm going to install a browser with built-in banners.

Microsoft isn't releasing any more versions of IE until Longhorn. Here is the article:

My web site looks like crap because IE doesn't work well with CSS 2 and I don't see them getting into CSS 3 any time soon. Since everyone in the world uses IE, you have to support it on your web site. It used to be where if you made a web site for Mozilla, it would work on all versions but I guess that's not going to be true for a while.

Some people wonder why there are minute version changes in OpenSource stuff, and not so much on stuff from people like Microsoft.....it's all marketing, marketing I say. Internally all develops will use "bitty" increments etc, but externally, the numbers are kept whole. Although if you look on the help pages of IE, MSN messenger etc, you'll see the entire version details.
