i know um both and i personally think they both suck. ;)
well suck, is pretty hash. i used to be a Perl monger, but once i wrote my first big program in it i got struck by the Perl curse. you can't ready what the hell you wrote. i've personally switched to Python for quick practical system and client side netowrking hacks.
as for Java, it try of so unsucessfully to do what Ada 95 did back in 95--just no one knew about it because of a hacker stigma.
http://www.qlippoth.com/ada.html
also the GNU Ada folks have JGANT which compiles Ada to jvm code instead of native code.
so i personally don't see anything Java does better then either Ada or Python--in terms of safety, speed, and portability.
Perl 6? i'll definitly look! :) but i can't promise anything. i'm glad they're doing a complete rewite though. Perl definitly needs a face lift. the Lisp community should take notice!

so, by reading a magazine, you've determined that perl will be god?

xilica, yes, I know both Perl and Java, and have used them both for numerous projects. Perl I've basically sworn off because I can do everything much easier and more organized in Python. Java I continue to use for my programming job, though not so much for my own use really.

Oh Strike you're so humble, you very well you haven't just sworn it off, you continue to troll for bashing opportunities.*
*Disclaimer: If you're name starts with a 'Str' and ends with a 'ike' you've possibility taken this post way too seriously.

ne'er shall you escape us :)
excuse me for the dumb question, but I am new...
...does Python do the same thing Perl does? Should I learn about Python and return this Perl book I have?

In my opinion, yes you should return the book :) Python doesn't really "do the same thing Perl does", but it has the same power as Perl, it's just done in a much more intelligent way.
