What's the best Java tutorial you've seen online? Is it free? I'm really interested in learning Java, but I've found the Java Tutorial doesn't quite give you as much 'in-depth' practice with the code. Also, most of the tutorials I've picked up focus on Java applets only, or GUI building, which I'm not really interested in. I'll be using Java for database connectivity and real-time handling of inputted data (via a socket, a file, or standard input).

Shameless Plug: KML and TheLinuxDuck Have a great site with several code examples on how to do simple, and not-so-simple task in Java. It's at http://www.codeexamples.org/
I too suggest "Thinking In Java".
And, I'm trying to ramp up my sourceforge project (again) and in a couple of weeks I'll be needing Java coders of all levels. If you'd like to try adding some simple, or complex, functionality (or JavaDoc comments or HTML documentation or whatever you feel comfortable doing) then you're welcome to go take a look at http://tapper.sf.net to see if that's a Java project you'd like to work on.
There's no time pressure or skill level requirement on Tapper. I've let the code stagnate for almost a year at one point :) So if you want to try your hand on some real code without the pressure or stress of a deadline, go ahead and check it out.
Ahem. KML?
I've found sun's java site to be pretty handy.

edit: forgot to mention, this one is my professor's old course notes from when I took my Java class with him. All the notes are online with plenty of examples for most topics in java.

Wow thanks guys! I'm actually going through Bruce Eckels' book right now, and I must say, it certainly IS in depth. It's still an easy to read book though, which I like. I'd love to help on your project Dru, but unfortunately I'm already spending 7-8 hours a day developing <plug>MatchZone (http://www.matchzone.net) in one way or another.

Well, I certainly won't beat you at chess
I dunno, After Wednesday evening I'm starting to feel like a blind monkey with alzheimer's could beat me at chess. :( I had a HUGE game against a 1200 player and then I may an even HUGER mistake. 2 moves later it was checkmate.
And I never saw it coming. Right up until she made the move. Arrrgh!
Hmm. could I beat a blind monkey with alzheimer's? Maybe if he had at least one hand tied behind his back... and his tail tied behind his back.
Anyway, you live you learn right :)
