I just had to buy a new mouse because the scroll wheel on my old optical one broke. :'(
I decided to give a wireless one a try. Has anyone had any problems with wireless mouses... mice? (what do you call them when they're computer-related? :p)
Jennifer
I've a friend who got one for use with his laptop.. the old one I saw was terrible, there was a nasty delay. But since he's had his new laptop it works seamlessly.
As for me.. my mouse while part of the optical generation, still has its tail.

Wireless mice are great if you don't mind either having a battery in it or sticking it in a recharge cradle when not in use. Personally, I'd rather use wired over battery.

I have a couple of Logitech MX-700s and one of the earlier Logitechs that are pretty similar but don't have the recharge cradle. I really like the MX-700 mouse, it is reliable and charges quickly. By quickly, I mean that on the rare occasion when your mouse runs out of juice, putting it on the crade for 15 minutes will usually get you back up and running for the day, or at least until you take a break.
The main drawbacks to the cordless opticals that I have noticed are:
1. The MX-700 is heavy. Not heavy as in lifting barbells heavy, but heavy enough to notice. But then, I kind of like that solid feel. The earlier Logitech is much lighter and now feels flimsy when I use it.
2. With age (talking a couple of years of use or so), the batteries tend to get tired and the range the mouse can sense dies down to a pretty small area. I suppose getting new batteries might solve this, but I haven't done that.
3. You are much better off, despite Logitech's claim that you don't need to do this, in having a line of sight between the mouse and the base. I know you shouldn't have to, but my experience is that it helps a lot.
4. The drawback to having a mouse without the recharger base is that, since you have to constantly change the batteries (and you HAVE to get rechargeables, or you will inevitably be caught without spares when your mouse batteries die), the lid to the battery compartment will break or become insecure after a while. The beauty of the mouse with the base charger is that you don't have this problem, you very rarely have to replace the batteries.
Anyway, I really like the cordless optical mice I have and never would go back to mice with cords. :)

Aargh, I should have gotten one with the rechargable cradle! I didn't see one though... at least not in the price range I was looking at. :p

Same, plus I don't like the weight of the wireless mice. I need a nice light mouse as I'm a gamer.
I use to have one, but my keyboard tray kept falling out of the base, dropping my keyboard & mouse. After a couple falls, the mouse broke. :(
I also no longer use that desk.
How is this for a good deal:

You can use it instead of a password. Easy way to log onto your computer.

So it prevents anyone else from using your computer's mouse?

No, it's attached to some software on your computer that allows you to use the finger print thing instead of typing in a password.

I'd suggest the microsoft wireless mouses. It is very argonomically designed. I don't think I spelled that right. Also, it is pretty cheap.

I've used them some, and so have some of my co-workers. I personally still prefer wired mice (actually I prefer wired trackballs, instead of mice), but wireless can work. And some of my co-workers actually prefer the wireless mice. The main issues I see with wireless mice are:
1) The mouse will either eat batteries, or you will need to get one of the mice that fits in the charger. If the latter, you will have to find someplace on your desk for the charger to fit (so you can easily keep the mouse charged up when not using it).
2) When the battery power (in your mouse) gets low, your mouse may start doing all sorts of weird movements of your cursor (before the mouse eventually stops working at all)! And Murphy's Law states that this will happen at the least opportune time. So if you want to go wireless, be diligent about keeping the mouse batteries charged up.
3) Wireless mice tend to be a little bigger/heaver then their wired counterparts (mostly due to the batteries in them) This isn't a huge amount of extra weight, but it is enough to be noticeable (and to some users, annoying). I happen to be in the latter camp, as I really like the lighter weight of the wired in devices (even though you have to contend with the "tail" when you go with a wired in mouse).
4) And if you are really unlucky, you might find your wireless mouse on the same frequency as a co-worker's mouse. If/when that happens, you may be scratching your head as to why the mouse is "moving on it's own" (when really what's happening, is that a co-worker's mouse is also moving your cursor)...

Myself, I prefer a trackball. I use the Logitech Trackman Wheel, and it is perfect for me. Uses less space than a mouse, ergonomically comfortable, and durable.
