View Full Version : Disallowing anonymous access to my site - modifying the .HTACCESS file- HELP
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to password protect my site? I have created it with FP and used to have it locked up but FPE's blew up recently and I am now unable to remove anonymous access. I receive an error saying "The access control file \".../.htaccess\" was not created by this client program and cannot be edited safely using this client program....but it was??
Support suggested I post this to the smart people on this site for suggestions on possibly editing the .HTACCESS file or??
Thank you,
Chip

Hi Chip,
If you are looking to password protect the FOLDERS on your site, there is a great tool available through the Control Panel. To use it:
- Log in to your Control Panel
- Click on Directory Protection
- Click on the folder you wish to protect (note: if you want to password protect more than one folder, you can just repeat this process for each folder]
- Mark the check box next to where it says Folder requires a password to access via http://
- The name you put in next to Protected Resource Name doesn't really matter too much - you can make it the name of the folder, if you wish
- Next you will create the login and pass for the folder... enter the first user name and hit Add New User
- Refresh the page, find the user's name in the list, enter a password and then hit Change Password
- The folder is now password protected with the user name and password you just created
Hope this helps!
