Hey I am just wondering, why don't you guys support ASP?

Because ASP in Windows. This is UNIX.

I know but there are programs you can get for UNIX and Linux so you can use ASP:
Instant ASP: http://www.instantasp.com
Chilli Soft: http://www.chillisoft.com

:)

Chili!ASP http://www.chiliasp.com/ Platform Independent Active Server Pages! :) s'not cheap though, $1,700 for unlimited servers.

That doesn't qualify as ASP ;)

I couldn't get a simple 20-line script to work on it. Cheap imitation :p

worked fine for me :)

That's Ok, my other host has Windows 2000 servers with ASP, and I can't get ASP to work on it :) my fault not theirs, but It's alright I'm just learning :)

I'd use ASP.

We've got something on a *nix box at work, I think it's ChiliASP, but whatever it is, it works fine.

Brian Asselin-
start simple... try this:
<%
response.write "Hello World!"
%<!-- -->>

it is not an answer to your question, but you might try php as scripting language. Easy to learn, if you know asp u will feel you already know php:)

Acually I have a really good knowledge of PHP, CGI, HTML, Javascript etc, but I just wanted to start learnign ASP and needed a server for testing. :)

I would like to see ASP for the same reason. Good place to learn how it works.

1) I don't like ASP. Though I use it sometimes.
2) ASP on *NIX doesn't work to speak of. I had a script that basically takes input from the QueryString and displays page content accordingly. (simple IF statement, no file/db access) and it didn't work. No helpful error messages either.
3) PHP is better
4) You should use PHP
5) PHP is good ;)
6) JUST USE PHP
7) Perl isn't bad either
8) Take your pick ;)

I agree with you, I know PHP is way better :) but... I'm in the website design and programming bussiness/area and people usually want you to be familiary with ASP more then PHP. PHP is way better, just most bussiness' mark that down as a requirement.:)

P.S. Did you know PHP stands for "Personal Home Page" ? :)

This is true...Most jobs that deal with web management list ASP as a requirement...not PHP.

That is why I'm interested in using ASP. If I can run my site off of it, then it would show potential employers that I know how to use it.

Everyone knows that the real functionality behind ASP isn't ASP itself. On Win platforms, ASP is pretty lame unless you have a whole lot ActiveX components that give you important functionalities like sending mail, connecting to databases, uploading files, network stuff etc.

I really can't say much about ASP on *nix platforms like Chillisoft. Since you can't use ActiveX components there, I suspect that *nix ASP will lose out to PHP.

By the way, with the new version (ASP.NET) in the offing, talk of ASP on *nix servers just seems redundant.

Of course, since PHP 4 lets you access com funcionality now, both ASP and PHP are actually great for scripting. Its a matter of choice.

I prefer PHP, big companies prefer ASP or ColdFusion cause that's what all the other sites use and they have more functionability with access db's and other types which they already use for their client details etc.

ASP has already lost, big time, in windows too i might add.

I like Perl, but you don't have many database options...

I don't think so. PHP stands for Hypertext Preprocessor

it was originally named personal homepage tools, but then they remnamed it.

PHP = recursive acronym for PHP Hypertext Preprocessor

Jordie

Yes but it ORIGINALLY stood for personal homepage. Now it stands for Hypertext PreProcessor. Should be HPP now ;)

That's completely wrong. Perl's DBI has every single functionality that PHP or ASP has. Just because it's not as well-documented as the other two doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Also, if you want HostRocket to support a unix ASP clone just so that you can screw around with it while you learn, wouldn't it make more sense to just install it on your own computer?

I do have it on my own computer, along with Apache, PHP, Perl and MySQL. :) But I want to learn it for a website I wish to build on my site in ASP.

But I have decided to find a second cheap host for ASP, any recommendations?

As a webhost, hostrocket should look into make all features that are reasonably possible available to its customers.

That said, I am happy with host rocket, despite its lack of ASP support :)

But having ASP installed on a Linux server is not reasonable. The unix ASP clones are cheap and buggy. I encourage you to look for one decent webhost which offers ASP on a unix-based system -- I don't think you'll be able to.
