I picked out a template, dumped out the "dolorus ipsum" or whatever the Latin stuff was, and uploaded it as index.htm. The images are .psd images. You can see what they look like at:

I have downloaded two freeware graphics programs, VW Vicman's Photo Editor and Serif Photo Plus. I can use many extensions, excluding .gif, in Vicman's.
I could buy a template, but if I don't know what to do with the files, I'll be in the same place. Now what? Help!

Open the folder until you get to index.html. Upload all the files that you see in that current view on to your server...Then open up index.html from your browser, you should see everything you see on your computer

Hey, Upnrunning...
I'm new here aswell, have'nt got my site upnrunning tho ;)
Here's what you do when downloaded a template. You'll first have to open it up in ie Photoshop, to slices it up...making small pieces of it so it'll load faster, this is prolly already done...;)
When this is done you open it up in ImageReady, wich comes with PS, and saves it as a HTML file, wich will render a index page and an image folder. Then you just upload that indexpage and the imagefolder to wich the indexpage is pointing in order to be able to show the images (wich now have been made into jpg or gif or whatever you choice was).
That's thefast and easy way, but I would suggest that you open up that index page in frontpage or Dreamweaver before uploading it. 'Coz Imageready do sometimes not "make" the best tables in wich the images will reside ;)
Hope I did help you in some way here...
Patric.
